Incremental and Full Backups

I would like to ask about the incremental backup, if I have a full back up on tape will it work if I back up incrementally on disk? Particularly, where does the incremental backups base the last backup, from the images on the storage or from catalog? Also, technotes would be appreciated. Thank you. :)
