I need a solution

**** Moved to new discussion from https://www-secure.symantec.com/connect/forums/how-configure-solaris-backup-servers-backup  ****

Hello All,

The solution aalready provided but have one query. That on my infra i already created one NFS share(on isilon storage) & that has been mounted on my backup server.

The catalog images now stored on that NFS store directly after backup as i change the DR save location. But my query is, if the mount point get distracted or unavailable due to some issue ,can we make some changes from NBU side to swap/change the store/save location of DR files ? I mean if the share path is not availble the files directly copys to other location but i need to mention that path but not sure where to make the changes.

I just want to make sure the 100% security of the catalog DR files.

Suggestions required on catalog size and moving master to a virtual machine

I need a solution

Hi all,

I have two master servers in my current environment. Details are as below:

Master 1: NBU 7.1.0.4 (physical)

Types of backup: Combination of UNIX, Windows OS backups (with BMR enabled for physical machines), Agent based backups for SQL, Lotus Domino and Oracle.

Average number of jobs that run on daily basis: 7500 (within a 14 hour backup window)

No. of media servers: 15 (physical)

No. of clients: Appr. 2200

Current catalog size: 1.1 TB

Master 2: NBU 7.5.0.6 (physical)

Types of backup: Combination of UNIX, Windows OS backups (with BMR enabled for physical machines), Agent based backups for SQL, Lotus Domino and Oracle.

Average number of jobs that run on daily basis: 5000 (within a 14 hour backup window)

No: of media servers: 8 (physical)

No. of clients: Appr. 800

Current catalog size: 520 GB

Both the masters are clustered using Veritas Global custering Option(active-passive mode). Catalog resides in a LUN which is replicated to the DR master LUN using SRDF.

With more requirements coming in we are planning to introduce another master with NetBackup 7.6.0.2 on a VM. Media servers will be physical as we use tapes only.

My questions are:
1) How big environment can I support with master on VM?

2) How much catalog might be a maximum recommended size on a master hosted ona VM?

3) Our observation from our current 2 masters- Even though Master 2 has less than half the number of clients as Master 1, the catalog size has already reached 520 GB and is still growing (the type of clients is similar). Is this because of the difference in version of NetBackup? Do recent versions add more to the catalog? If yes, then should I expect a bigger catalog on 7.6.0.2?

I need a solution

Hi,

I want to capture any Tape/Media warnings while taking backup from Netbackup.

Is there any report, or file system log where I can check these warnings.

currently Tapes are managed by an external verndor, want to raise these warnings to the vendor so that they are actioned before tapes actually fail.

Any help on this would be highly appriciated.

I need a solution

Hi Friends,

I am new to Netbackup. I did a manual backup as requested and I want to put the information of files backed up and the retention in the ticket as text. if I go to the admin gui and try to do a restore of the files backed up, I see the files but not the retention.

Is there any command line command which will display the files names & retention which are backed up.

Thanks in advance.

NetBackup accelerator policy validation failed

I need a solution

Hi, we are helping a customer to setup accelerator policy. The customer's master server is NBU 7.5.0.7 on Windows Server 2008 R2. When we created the policy to use accelerator in Windows Remote Administration Console, it shows some error message similar to the one below:

To use the accelerator, select storage units from supported storage server:

PureDisk Deduplication (PDDO), Media Server Deduplication (MSDP), Symantec clouds, and other qualified storage servers.

Currently configured and supported storage servers are:

PureDisk on <servername>

I did some research and find there is Symnatec KB which talks about this:

http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?pag...

In our case, we tried to run Windows Remote Administration Console from both master and media servers (media servers are also NBU 7.5.0.7 on Windows Server 2008 R2) but got the same error.

My question is: besides try Java Console, are there any other ways to resolve this issue? Thanks in advance.

MS-SQL DBBACKEX failure from third party scheduler ?

I need a solution

Problem : Running MS SQL backups from a third party scheduler (MS SQL Scheduler) with no hard coding of user ID or password refuses to use the NBU SQL userID and password in the windows registry.

Anybody found a better solution than what we have found to date?

So far found:

  • It doesn't work and the use of the "encrypted file" appears to be a myth.  There seems to be no recent documentation on this encrypted file creation and usage. So far support have recommend TECH5647 as the solution.
  • Making the SQL user that NBU has in the registry with its encrypted password a local admin will work.  For security reasons this is not a desirable solution.  The NBU SQL user is set as a SQL admin on the box and in AD.
  • Making the SQL backup user have read access to:

-- The registry location where the NBU user ID and password is kept +

-- The location where the BCH file is kept

-- NBU install area. Suspect it may require write access to the NBU log area.

TECH5647

In document TECH5647 it describes "By omitting the userID and passwords from the batch file, you can ensure that NetBackup for SQL Server will read the default parameters from an encrypted login file" and that file can be found under  install_path\DbExt\Mssql\Logins\ when you followed the procedure described in the tech note.

That tech note is 14 years old and probably every related document, including the current manual, refers to the "encrypted file" without any explanation.  Looks like the modern version of NBU doesn't create that file and probably 14 years ago didn't use the registry as a location to store the encrypted user ID and password.

Hi All,

I am planning for Netbackup version upgrade from 7.5 to 7.6.

Do i require any additional license other than the existing license keys?

I think upgrade license key has to be provided by Vendor, but I'm not sure.

Kindly provide your inputs.

Netbackup TIR data pruned at 10 days

I need a solution

Netbackup 7.6.0.2 master/media server and client.

In order to use synthetic backups I have turned on True Image Restore, but am finding the TIR data is being pruned too soon.

Initially I found my differentials were running as fulls and Synthetic Fulls were only partially complete because of missing TIR data.

I was seeing warning messages about "old TIR file /usr/openv/netbackup/tir_info/.../NetBackup_file_info is missing. Backing up everything in <path>".

I found the configuration section in the master server properties where this TIR data pruning time interval can be adjusted (default is 1 day). I have adjusted this up to 120 days but am finding the data is still being pruned at about 10 days.

My backups (~100TB) take about 2 weeks to complete over our dedicated WAN link and I am finding that by the time the next incremental attemts to run, the missing TIR data causes the incremental to effectively be a full. This becomes a viscious circle and I can never seem to get ahead.

Does anyone know if TIR data pruning can go past 10 days? I couldnt find any upper limit in the docs.

Am I missing some other fundamantal issue?

Thanks for any help

Robert

List of (some) known issues with NetBackup v7.6.0.2...

I do not need a solution (just sharing information)

Hi,

I've had a quick Google search for issues with NetBackup v7.6.0.2 and was surprised to find that only two were listed on the LBN 7.6 page:

    http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?pag...

Below is a brief list of what I managed to find.

Is anyone else aware of any other issues to watch out for?

Items listed on LBN 7.6 page:

Shortly before the NetBackup 7.6.0.2 Maintenance Release was released, it was determined that recent changes made by Microsoft in their Windows 2012 R2 Update 1 would prevent granular recovery from working correctly when the NetBackup for Hyper-V role was used on backup hosts with the above mentioned update applied.

When the BMR boot server is upgraded from a previous version and especially when there are few existing SRTs (shared resource trees) available, the upgrade process does not automatically clean-up the older MS-WinPE 2.1 images. These need to be cleaned up manually.  If the manual cleanup is not done, there is a risk creating subsequent SRTs which will have the wrong version of MS-WinPE.  This can impact restores.

Media Server Load Balancing

I need a solution

Hi,

We are planning to implement Netbackup 7.6 and deploy multiple media servers that will perform backups to a Data Domain storage server.

One storage unit will be created on the Data domain system and presented to the netbackup domain, the a disk pool and a storage unit will be created in netbackup against that data domain storage unit (LSU).

I need to understand how to configure media server load balancing so backups to that storage unit are load balanced across the 3 media servers that will be provisioned. We are not planning to use storage unit groups (we will only have one storage unit). So, under the storage unit properties, if i select the option to tick the three media servers as the media servers that will have access to that storage unit... will that automatically implement load balancing between the three media servers? or do I need to do anything else?

How do I delete backups on an old DiskPool

I need a solution

Hello everyone,

I hope you can help me out.  Several months ago, my company added a new MSA disk pool to replace our aging DataDomain disk pool.  All backup policies were reconfigured to stop using DataDomain and, originally, the usage on DataDomain dropped as backups aged and expired.  The problem is that the Data Domain usage only dropped to 14% and has been stuck there for over a month.  When I go into the NetBackup GUI (version 7.1) and navigate to "Media and Device Management"> Devices > Disk Pools, it displays 2.5677 TB used oiut of 18.1005 TB total (about 14%).

I'm not sure why these backups are not expiring.  After doing some reading, I ran the following from D:\Program Files\Veritas\NetBackup\bin\admincmd on my NetBackup admin host:

bpimmedia -L -stype DiskPool -dp dd670
Backup-ID Policy ScheduleType
Copy Frag Expires DiskType DiskPoolName DiskVolume StorageServerName
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
APP-SRV29_1357349450 APP_SRV29 FULL
1 1 1360027850 DiskPool dd670 DDSTU1 inf-srv17
APP-SRV29_1357349451  APP_SRV29  FULL
1 1 1360027851 DiskPool dd670 DDSTU1 inf-srv17
... (and on for hundreds of entries)

The server APP_SRV29 no longer exists so we certainly don't need to keep these backups (because all backups are for disaster recovery, not historical snapshots).  After some more reading, I found documents talking about bpexpdate.  Unfortunatetly, using this command gives me "no entry was found":

bpexpdate  -backupid APP-SRV29_1357349450 -d 0
Are you SURE you want to delete APP-SRV29_1357349450 y/n (n)? y
no entity was found

Oddly, even though the bpimmedia command shows the Policy of APP_SRV29, the bpimagelist shows nothing:

bpimagelist -policy APP_SRV29
no entity was found

I am very frustrated.  I have 2.6 TB of backups sitting in my disk pool that I can see but not clean up.  Can anyone offer me help on how to delete these backup IDs?  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Ken
