Duplication performance poor

I need a solution

Our backup server is NBU Enterprise Server, 7.5.0.7 running on OEL 5.10 (x86), on a Dell R620 server and Dell PVTL 2000 (2 x LTO5 drives), each drive connected via 6Gps SAS interface to NBU server.

We backup several items to disk, among them two Exchange 2010 servers. We need the GRT option as we need to recover items at a message level. The disk is an iSCSI volume, presented rw to the OS as mount point /nfsbackup (/dev/mapper/idatap1 on /nfsbackup type ext4 (rw,_netdev)).

The issue I am running into is what I consider to be poor performance during duplication from disk to tape. We can't get the images off disk fast enough (it's a 1.5TB volume) to make room for the next images. The current situation is a great example. They are both Exchange 2010 GRT images, one from each server.

Job #1: Started 12/02/2014 20:30:44; 55% done (217823232KB of 395169442KB done), est throughput: 4731KB/sec

Job #2: Started 12/03/2014 01:08:54; 54% done (202821632KB of 374121233KB done), est throughput: 6889KB/sec

Interfaces

NBU server: eth1, eth2 on 1Gbps (not bonded) interfaces to storage network; jumbo frames enabled

iSCSI storage: multipathed, 2 interfaces @ 1Gbps each, jumbo frames enabled

I'm monitoring the NBU server interface with Solarwinds, and I'm getting maybe 80MB/s (combined), barely breaking 8% utilization. Now, utilization does peak from time to time (see image at end) but then it always settles down to this level.

Adding a robot / tape drive writes to our environment

I need a solution

Hi,

I have a Netbackup 7.5 Enterpise environment, currently using Data Domain. We've had a TLD robot with one tape drive (so far) added to the environment but I need help on how to proceed.

We have a mixed Windows / Unix environment. The robot control host is a Unix server that is already configured as a Data Domain media server that currently only backs itself up. I have added the robot to Netbackup using the Configure Storage Devices wizard. The ultimate purpose of this robot will be to act as the final stage of our backup process: 1) write backup to local Data Domain, 2) replicate to remote data domain on 2nd site, 3) write production backups for long-term retention to tape.

Where do I go from here? What I want is for a media server - not necessarily the one that is the robotic control host - to be able to read data from Data Domain and write it to the robot/tape. I assume this will be the final stage of an SLP used for a backup policy.

At the moment I don't even know how to make any media server write to tape. For Data Domain I do the following:

  • Create a storage unit on Data Domain and add one media server to it.
  • Create an SLP for the storage unit that duplicates to a matching storage unit on the remote data domain
  • Install the DDBoost plugin to the media server then run the commands to configure it to write to Data Domain:
    • nbdevconfig -creatests -stype DataDomain -storage_server [data_domain_box] -media_server [media_server]
    • tpconfig -add -storage_server [data domain box] -stype DataDomain -sts_user_id ostuser -password password

....and I'm good to go.

If I want to make the current robotic control host (which obviously can see the robot on the san fabric) write it's own data to a tape, what do I need to do?

From there, how do I configure a replication to tape from Data Domain? I've scoured through the standard documentation but can't find any useful info on how to put this together.

Thanks!

Tapes to eject

I need a solution

Hi everybody,

I would like to automize the ejection of the volumes from the robot, so every tape used on tonight's jobs will be automacally ejected tomorrow morning.

Is there any way to perform this with Netbackup 7.6 running on Windows 2008 RC2?

Thank you in advance.

Hello,

We are running 2 appliances hat function as master server.

I want to configure AIR between tham but when I tried to add a trusted master server I get the next error:

" Could not establish secure connection trusted master server. The remote master server may not be running NetBackup version 7.6 higher(5614) "

Important to mention that both of appliances with netbackup version of 7.6.0.4

The number of servers I am administering is about to go from 140 to 500. This changes the dynamics of how to apply NBU patches. I read about LiveUpdate. Based on your experiences, is this a worthwhile approach or is there another method which works better?

Many thanks in advance.

I need a solution

Hi

Is anyone know if the NetBackup client 7.6.0.3 can read and backup DFSR (Shadow Copy Components) from Windows 2012 and 2012 R2 ?

I got error like this: Hidden Device, Ignoring filelist entry for'Shadow Copy Components:\User Data\Distributed File System Replication\DfsrReplicatedFolders\MyData'

http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?pag...

On Windows 2008 I don't have any problems, but on Windows 2012 I get this.

C:\>Wmic /namespace:\\root\microsoftdfs path DfsrReplicatedFolderInfo get
No Instance(s) Available.
C:\>Wmic /namespace:\\root\microsoftdfs path DfsrVolumeInfo get

I'm not sure is a problem with DFSR or with NetBackup client on Windows 2012.

32 bit library for Oracle

I need a solution

We are in the process of testing writing our RMAN backups directly to our appliance rather than writing them to disk and then using Netbackup to backup those files.  We currently have a 5220 master/media server running 2.6.0.3 and a db client running on a Sparc T4, Solaris 10.  I've installed the Netbackup client and set up the policy, and had the DBA's run the oracle_link script to link Oracle to Netbackup.

When we run a test backup, we are getting ORA-19554 & ORA-27211 errors.  They are suggesting that the problem is due to the Oracle software being 32 bit and the library file for Netbackup being 64 bit.  We are going to be migrating our Oracle environment to 64 bit in the future, but not any time soon, so I've spent the better part of the day looking for alternatives to allow us to get this to work in our current config or confirmation that it cannot work.  I haven't been able to find anything conclusive either way.

Is it possible to add a 32 bit version of the library?  I'm assuming that it's not possible, but this is the first time we have considered backing up our Oracle db's this way, so it's new to me.  Any alternate suggestions would be welcome also.

How to connect Master server with two shared robots in one library

The robot can be seen from system.

#cfgadm al

c4::500104f000affbb9           med-changer  connected    configured   unknown

I finished all steps to do sg build and install but sgcan still didn't show the robot even though I can see them under /dev/sg

root@dvifap13:/dev/sg # ls -l | grep bb9
lrwxrwxrwx   1 root     root          91 Dec  3 14:50 c0tw500104f000affbb9l0 -> ../../devices/pci@7c0/pci@0/pci@1/pci@0,2/fibre-channel@2/fp@0,0/sg@w500104f000affbb9,0:raw

I manually created the robot, but it shows not enabled. I used the device configuration Wizard, it didn't show the newly configured robot, all drives in that library shows standalone drives. Please let me know how to configure to make the master server be able to see the shared two robots in the same library.

Thanks!

Anyone run into nbars memory leak on NetBackup Solaris master?

I need a solution

I've got a slow memory leak in the nbars binary.  Eventually gets big enough (>6GB) that I have to restart NetBackup services on the master.  The leak is pretty slow - I can go several weeks before it becomes an issue and I need to restart.

Just wondering if anyone else has run into this leak on their Solaris master?

I need a solution

one of my customers has issues with a media-server (MSDP)

all jobs send to this MSDP are ending with error 83 (media open error)

the environment is like this:

1 master server (win 2008 R2 SP1 Std x64)

1 media server (win 2008 R2 SP1 Std x64) with MSDP (server A)

1 media server (win 2008 R2 Std x64) With MSDP (Server B)

server B is working correctly.

Server A isn't writing backups to his MSDP.

when trying to get an update on teh diskpools within NBU console we get the error : "unable to fetch the updated information for the disk pool xxx. invalid command parameter. RDSM has encountered an issue with STS where the server was not found: getdiskvolumeinfo"

but when I run the command "nbdevquery -listdp -stype PureDisk -U" They both get the result admin up, internal up

ipv6 is disabled on all the servers.

Any Idea what is going wrong and how to fix it?

NBU 7.6 fails to backup using policy-type "Enterprise-Vault"

I need a solution

Hello All,

I am trying to backup my Enterprise Vault 10.0.4 data (Indexes, SQL and Vaul stores) using NetBackup 7.6.0.1. I can get the backup to work if I use MS-Windows as the Policy-type, but it always fails when I try to use Enterprise-Vault as the Policy_type - the error is client/server handshaking failed(26)

I have modified VSS on the Enterprise Vault server to use unlimited space as suggested inn one of the tech articles

Can anyine help me with this ?

The details are:-

Note that this is all running as VMware VMs on my Laptop:
EV Environment
EV ver 10.0.4
EV Site = EVARCHIVE
EV server - EV.link2.com  (windows 2008 R2)
Windows firewall off

DC=DC2.link2.com (Windows 2008 R2) - this is also the SQL server
SQL Server version is 2008 R2

NetBackup Environment
NBU ver = 7.6.0.1
NBU Master = NBU76Master  (windows 2008 R2)
NBU Media = NBU76Media (Windows 2008 R2)

Windows firewall off

Name resolution works OK from all my servers.

Note that Enterprise Vault work OK, and NetNbackup works OK

I can backup up the SQL server OK using ther MS-SQL agent
I can backup flat files on the EV2 server OK when the Policy-type is MS-Windows.

The backup always fails when I try to use Enterprise-Vault as the Policy-Type
I have created a new policy, with the following options:-
Name:- EV_Index
Policy-type - Enterprise-Vault
Client - EV2
backup Selection - Chose Enterprise Vault 10 and selected EV_INDEX_LOCATION= from the available list, and then manually entered the EV Site name, so the backup selection reads
EV_INDEX_LOCATION=EVARCHIVE

When I manually run the backup job, its fails;
the "Job Overview status" is client/server handshaking failed(26)
The detailed Status is:-

Hi All,

Thanks for your support.....

We have netbackup as a backup tool.We have differenet rman backup policy.

Backup script contains below lines.I have doubt about parameters.

allocate channel ch1 type 'sbt_tape' parms='ENV=(NB_ORA_SERV=utsx45,NB_ORA_CLIENT=utsx19,NB_ORA_POLICY=utsx19_ALM_ora_hot,NB_ORA_SCHED=prod_weekly)';
allocate channel ch2 type 'sbt_tape' parms='ENV=(NB_ORA_SERV=utsx45,NB_ORA_CLIENT=utsx19,NB_ORA_POLICY=utsx19_ALM_ora_hot,NB_ORA_SCHED=prod_weekly)';

When we restore the backup,Should i mention all the above parameters or only one parameter ( NB_ORA_CLIENT ) is enough.

Thanks,

Adding LTO6 drives to library with LTO4 drives

I need a solution

Hello,

Yesterday we added several LTO6 drives to our SL8500 library that has LTO4 drives.

After we installed the new drives, I zoned them to one media server, ran the wizard and it discovered a new robot. Now I have the original ACS(0) and ACS(2), which is the new robot. I also configured a new storage unit on the new media server for the new tapes.

I inserted 10 LTO6 tapes and manually moved them to a volume pool called LTO6_TEST that I just created.

I ran a test backup using the new media server and it ran successfully.

This morning I added 10 more drives to the library and when I ran the Robot Inventory, it tries to add the tapes but when it goes to the first of the LTO6 tapes that already existed there, it shows the following:

Update failed: could not add new media ID 'M00146' into robot
Insert media failed:
media ID not unique in database (34)

And then it stops and doesn't add the new media. What am I doing wrong? Also, what would be the best practice for a libarry with 2 different kinds of drives, LTO4 and LTO6?

Backing up workstations and jobs are being suspended

I need a solution

Have an older NB environment and backing up workstations.  The jobs run, but over time, get suspended after about 10 hours.  Need help finding out why and how to solve this.

Master server is only server and backing up to DataDomain appliance using OST.

Again, backing up workstations and the speeds are horrible and the backups do run for many hours if not days.  I suspect it could be a timeout setting, but need help diagnosing it.

Thanks in advance!

I filtered a big load of stuff out. Important thing (in my mind) is "FindFirstFile(Z:\backups\mspwksv20\allusers\full\1417703802\_vmir\mspwksv20-flat.vmdk) indicates that the file exists" and yet we get a cannot find the files eror.

vCenter shows the NFS mount and then dismount.

Has anyione seen this before?
