I need a solution

I have a basic question in my mind, and need you to help me out.

 
I wanted to make two copies of the backup as show in the screenshot above. I have one STU and 4 drives in the tape library. My questions are following:
1. when making two copies, will data be written to two different drives, or could be written to 4 different drives. If it could be 4, where and how could it be done?

2. Assume each copy has their own set of tapes, how do I know one set of all tape ID’s, and therefore I can eject the whole set, and then send them to offsite?

Your advices are greatly appreciated.


How restore an encrypted backup from an external client and tape

I need a solution

Hi.

We need to restore a backup executed in an external Veritas Enterprise Server 6.5.5 platform,in our platform (with the same version of Veritas).

This backup was encrypted and the tape used is valid for our backup robot (and LTO-3 tape).

The backup was done for a client machine that doesn't exist nowadays in our platform.

1. It's possible to restore this encrypted backup in our platform using this tape?.

2. How could we restore it?, what steps should be done and how?.

Any help on this?

NetBackup Enterprise - NDMP - Backing up from NetApp, Restoring to IBM StoreWize Unified (recovery process)

Hello,

I would like to know if there is any supported solution to restore backups done from a NetApp NAS (FAS) to a IBM StoreWize NAS (Unified).
Both connected storage infrastructure can be used through NDMP at least but I would like to know if NetBackup can manage this.

Also, if there is a solution, is there any constraints / planned behaviours to do that ? (document rights/security while local and/or MS AD integration, HW firmware, OnTap/StoreWize versions, NDMP versions, ...).

I need a solution

I having this problem after upgrade 6.5.5 to 7.5.0.5 . I found that there are some duplicate entry in my nbemmcmd when i do a -listhosts.

There are total of 3 entry with this . 2 are the media server hostname and one are the NDMP host.

It is safe to remove those dumpy entries?

I need a solution

Hi All,

 

I have issue about nbu client port (1556, 13782, & 13724). My nbu media server is linux redhat 2.6 running on nbu 7.1.0.4 , client is win2003 64 bits running on nbu 7.1.0.4. I am not able to telnet from media server to client except I log on client. no FW between the media server & client. Anyone know how to fix it ? Thanks.

Hi,

 

Master server : windows 2008

Media server : Window 2008

Netbackup version on both Master and Media is : 7.1.0.3

Clients: AIX 6.1 TL7

We are taking sap and Oracle backup and storage is DD890.

for last 3 days the backups are writing very slow, please let me what could be the reason and also let me know what need to be checked.

for eg if usaully backup writes 30000 kB/s now its writes to 15000 KB/s and that takes double the amount of time to get complete.

I have installed a nbu master server and media server on the same aix ,and the dirve is a LTO5 tape dirver  linked directly with the master server.Using the vmoprcmd,i can see there is a tape in the dirver,but it  has not been  labled.

When using the commond   'bplabel -m A00001 -d hcart2 -p NetBackup -o -u 0',it turned out 'Error reported by media operation: requested media id is not assigned to this host in the EMM database'

Can you help me how to solve this.

1. Assign 4 drives for each media server or
2. Assign all as shared drives to 3 media server

Hi, first i would like to sorry for my english :)

 

So, i've Netbackup 7.5.0.5 on 2k8R2, Exchange 2010, can anyone give me links or enything about restore procedure. My problem is i don't know how to restore particular email from differential. What i can do is restore for example particular email of user who delete it but only from full backup, i can't do it from differential.

What I'm looking for i step by step restore procedure what to do if i have case like above, i have full and diff. and i dont know how to restore emails from mailbox with diff. Should I markt full with differential both at the same time on timeline in BAR console, go to user mailbox and check deleted mails and then go to Restore or should I also mark checkbox Logs in Database to which mails belongs as well and then go to Restore? Do i have to prepare Exchange in some way before i start restore procedure?

Configuring Replication in Netbackup 7.5.0.4 with Dell Dr4000

HI All,

One of Our client has purchansed 2 Dell DR4000 Devices ( ver 1.1 ) . We use Netbackup 7.5.0.4 in Windows 2008 master server ( Media server is also same ) .

We want to use one device for primary and second for Replication . Here are the 2 options i tried .

1. Configure backup on to DellDR4000-1 & Replicate it to Dell DR4000-2 ..We are trying to replicate at OST container level by using Storage feature , which is not allowing us to create replication . Gives error like " Could not configure both OST & Relication on container . ..

 

2. Trying to configure snapshot backup to Dell Dr4000-1 and replicate it to Dell Dr4000-2 by using netbackup . But I am unable to set the option " with DellDr4000 as it is not showing any available disk's when i select relication source or target with OST ( creating diskpool) .

 

 

I am new to Netbackup . Please help me in this .. how can we configure replication to 2nd device .

I need a solution

I am backing up a server with all local drives. Drives c:\ an d:\ get backed up but drive e:\ gives me status 13 error. I have attached the bpbkar log. It seems to be a file corruption error but the bpbkar log does not tell me which file. Is there any way to find out. The backups were fine for this server till today.

Inherited a NBU 7.1 environment running on an old Sun box with an SL48 robot / four drive library.  Looking to upgrade soon to a new server running RHEL 6.3 and NBU 7.5 with a new LTO 5 four drive library.  Backups seem to run but, although the storage unit is configured with max concurrent write drives = 4 and max streams per drive = 8, multiple simultaneously running jobs write to a single drive, leaving the other three idle.  Understand that a job may not be able to write to two drives simultaneously (maybe someone can confirm this).  Policy Storage is set to Any_Available.

Part 2.  I have a mix of Windows and Linux application, file, and database servers and need to shrink my backup times.  What are some thoughts regarding four individual tape drives versus a four-drive library?  I've run HP DP with individual drives and have had no problem running single jobs to multiple drives.

Trying to run a monthly vault to tape and receiving an error. Im fairly new to NBU so I am not sure how to best troubleshoot this issue.

Thought of sharing a list of FAQs about tape import that I compiled from different sources & in-house tests. Hope it helps!
 
Q: We have 2 media, NBU001 and NBU002.
 
NBU001 contains 2 fragments: 
winsrv_1234567890
unixsrv_1320000000 (first fragment)    
 
NBU002 contains 3 fragments:
unixsrv_1320000000   (second fragment)
unixsrv_1320000000   (third fragment)
websrv_1331000000
 
What happens if NBU001 is forcefully expired by running "bpexpdate -m NBU001 -d 0" ?
 
A: Both winsrv_1234567890 and unixsrv_1320000000 backups will be expired along with it. This is despite unixsrv_1320000000 having some fragments on another tape.
 
 
Q: How do we perform phase 1 and phase 2 import using NetBackup GUI?

Q: What does phase 1 import do?
A: It physically reads the tape, grabs the header of each fragment it finds on the tape, check if catalog information exists for the backup mentioned in the fragment, and if not, it will re-create the backup header information within NetBackup. The header of an imported backup contains fragment information, media ID, tape offset, etc.
 
Phase 1 import is always done per tape. You have to specify the media ID to perform phase 1 import. It is generally quite fast, as it only read the backup header of each fragment. All backups that are recreated using phase 1 import will have IMAGE_TYPE equal to 1.
 
 
Q: What does phase 2 import do?
A: Phase 2 import relies on the header information generated by phase 1 import. 
After phase 1 is done, you can search for backup images eligible for phase 2 import (in the background, NetBackup will search for images with IMAGE_TYPE equal to 1). Phase 2 import starts by locating fragment one, mounts the corresponding tape and read the tape content block by block to generate the backup metadata (i.e. the file structure that you see in the backup). It does the same process for the rest of the fragments listed in the backup header.
 
Unlike phase 1, phase 2 import is not done per tape. It is done per backup image. You can do phase 2 import for just one image, multiple images, or even all eligible images in one shot (and just leave it running until all images are imported). The actual finish time depends on the number of tape drives, tapes, file structure, among other things. It is usually slow.
 
 
Q: What is the retention period of imported backups?
A: Imported backup will have the same retention period of original backup. If original backup retention is 1 year, imported backup will expire 1 year from the first time the header file gets generated (via phase 1 import).
 
 
Q: I have a regular backup that has 10 fragments, consuming 10 tapes (one fragment per tape). I successfully performed phase 1 import against tape 1 to 8. Tape 9 and 10 are lost. In the backup header, the fragment is sequential (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8).
Will phase 2 import work? If it doesn't, how does NetBackup know the last fragment is missing?
 
A: The above scenario will usually work for backup that doesn't use True Image Restore (TIR) information. NetBackup will happily mount the tape where fragment 1 resides, generate metadata information,  continues with fragment 2, and so on until fragment 9. Import phase 2 will complete with status 0. 
In this case, you may still be able to perform restore against the imported backup, but bear in mind that the backup doesn't have the entire data.
 
Phase 2 import of backups that use TIR information, such as FlashBackup, FlashBackup-Windows and NDMP backups will not work at all.
 
The last fragment in NDMP backup is always TIR fragment, and naturally, it resides on the last tape. If the last tape is missing, phase 2 import will fail almost immediately even if all other fragments exist and sequential (including fragment 1).
 
When the last tape (with the TIR fragment) is imported successfully, the TIR fragment will be put at the top of the fragment list (fragment number = -1). This information is again recorded in the backup header.

Backup header information can be obtained by running:  <Install Dir>\NetBackup\bin\cat_export -client <clientname>
Or if you know the backup ID, run: <Install Dir>\NetBackup\bin\cat_export -backupid <backupid>
The output is located in <Install Dir>\NetBackup\db.export\
 
 
Recommendation:
The best approach to importing tapes is to first do phase 1 against all known tapes. This will minimize hiccups during phase 2 import.

Assigned tape not in Catalog

I need a solution

Hi,

I added a new tape that probably was bad.
Netbackup tried but chooked immediatly writing to the tape. (it just re-started on another tape)

Now the tape is assigned but it's not in the Catalog!
I Can't delete it or label or erase it because it is assigned.

I got a new Tape in the library

SAN Client Hyper-V Cluster - Only LAN

I need a solution

Hello

I've set up a FT Server to be able to backup some VMs using an SAN.

All Hyper-V servers access the SAN and we can backup any Host server without a problem.

After all tests ran great, we set up the cluster name, so we will be able to backup any VM, regardless the Hyper-V Host.

The problem started at this point. If we set a Hyper-V host, we perform a SAN backup, but if we set up the Hyper-V cluster name, NBU start the communication on LAN.

All procedures on nbemmcmd -addhost and nbemmcmd -updatehost to create the cluster name and add the nodes names was made.

We've tried to manually create the cluster on SAN Clients list, but we got an error saying that this client is already set up at EMM.

Still, if we start the backup using the cluster name, we just got a LAN transport.

 

Any ideas?

 

 

 

NetBackup Appliance - Hardening Question

Dear All,

There is Critical System Protection Suite come with NetBackup appliance.

May I know if customer can

1) configure ssh for specific server (client) hosts to remote only?

2) select which port(such as http/80 , ssh/22...)  turn on / turn off on the appliance ?
