SQL DB backup failure

I need a solution

Hi

Client Win 2000, SQL 2000,  NetBackup 6.5.5

master & media 7.6.0.3, Solaris 10.

database backup of all sql db are running fine except one. Its backup are failing with EC6.

and following errors we can see in evenet veiwer:

18210 : BackupVirtualDeviceFile::RequestDurableMedia: Flush failure on backup device 'VNBU0-5656-5684-1424077140'. Operating system error 995(The I/O operation has been aborted because of either a thread exit or an application request.

Point Master server to seperate backup NIC on client

I need a solution

I am currently having a performance issue with a VM client backup running extreamly slow that is located on a DMZ. For testing purposes and for future rollouts we want to create a Backup network to bypass the firewall to see if that is the issue. We created a second virtual NIC on the VM and gave it an address on the same subnet as the Master. Will I need to alter my host file on the Master to point it to the new NIC and clear the Host Cache with bpclntcmd -clear_host_cache ? Is there a better way to configure a Static route to the new NIC?

'nbdisco' causing excessive Oracle logins ?

I need a solution

Hi All,

The Oracle DBA is seeing Oracle logins at 6 hour intervals, throughut the day, for each Oracle SID. Since there are over 100 instances, this is messing up his log. I am suspicious of 'nbdisco' on NetBackup 7.6 client, and wondering...

1. What it's polling frequency for 'nbdisco', and if that can be changed ?

2 Will the  "REPORT_CLIENT_DISCOVERIES = FALSE" bp.conf setting disable polling for Oracle instances altogether, or just disable the reporting of instances back to the master (while continueing to poll for them) ?

3. Is there any documentation for 'nbdisco', other than its mention in "NetBackup 7.6 Oracle Admin Guide" pages 53-54 ?

NetBackup 7.6.0.3 (probably Linux based)

NetBackup 7.6.0.3 client on RHEL 6.5.

NetBackup and Client side Encryption

I need a solution

Hello

Can someone please help me with the following question.

We have NetBackup version 7.6.0.3

I have a physical Server (Windows Server 2012 R2) which I want to backup

As there is sensative data on this Server I want to 'encrypt the backup'

Ideally I also want to be able to perform a bare metal restore of the Server should it fail completley

I want to backup to disk (e.g. disk pool) not tape

I watched a view videos on youtube, and it said use 'client' side encryption and compression before sending the data across to the Netbackup Server to be stored on disk. This is OK I can use client side encryption and compression as the backup will happen over night.

However my questions are

1:

if the client is doing the encryption, where are the encryption keys stored which will be require to decrupt the data when a restore is required? For example of the keys are stored on the Server being backed up, then is the Server fails I will not be able to restore the backup to another Server as the keys will be lost along with the Server.

2: If I can use client side encryption and compression to do my backup, does this configuration support bare metal restore of the Server, should the Server fail completley

3: Where can I download an eval of Netbackup 7.6.0.3 to test this in a lab before trying it in production as although we have license keys there are for the copy of NetBackup being used in production.

Thanks all in advance

Back up specific files from NetBackup master command-line

I need a solution

I would like to start a backup of specific files only.

With bpbackup I can do this using the -f flag or a files list, but only when running bpbackup on the client. When running from the master with the -i flag, this feature is not supported.

So is there any way the master can be told to back up specific files on a client?

SQL Backup failures.

I need a solution

Master & Media Solaris 10, 7.6.0.3

backup of all DB are running fine except one and size of this DB is approx 2 MB.
logs are attached:

V-center Server Credentials - Local vsphere Account or AD ID account ?

I need a solution

I have the following set up in my NBU environment:-

NBU: 7.6.0.1

Master Server: Windows 2008 64bit

v-center Server: 5.5

80% of the clients configured for backup in our environment are VMs.

The credential configured for Vmware Vcenter server in our environment is through a vsphere local account (vsphere.local\bkpmaster)

The issue comes up when the password set for this account gets expired every 90 days and all vmware backup starts failing with error code 4239 (Unable to find the virtual machine).

Though our VMware admin says that we can extend the expiration for this local account to 120 days or so, but they can never set this password to never-expire as they dont have any such option.

The workaround suggested in this case is to get an AD ID account created for the NetBackup access to this vCenter server in our environment and then, this AD ID account password can be set to never-expire.

1) I would like to know what are the implications of this change to the existing Virtual machine backup in our environment ?

2) Is AD ID account would be a better idea than local vcenter account?

3) Do we need to have special previleges/permissions other than those in local vcenter account for this new AD ID account?

As per NBU for Vmware guide; NetBackup needs access to this vcenter server for either of the following reasons:-

  • To browse the server's virtual machines and back them up.
  • To use the server as a target for restoring virtual machine

Do we need to have any special privileges in place for an account other than above two ?

4) Also, after creating AD ID account, the only change we need to do is to change the credentials with new AD ID account under "Credentials" => "virtual       machine servers" ?  Or do we need to make changes anywhere else too ?

Please guide and suggest further.

Many Thanks Folks.

How to tell what a queued duplication job relates to.

I need a solution

We have several queued duplication jobs, but when you click on them in the Activity monitor, there are no details about the policy it is for or the clients, so how do you find this out?

bpimport return code if job is successful

I need a solution
We have a job that needs to check if the bpimport is completed before it continues.
Is there a return code or status that we can use in a condition to check whether the import process is successfully completed and the images are available. Also let us know the directory where the bpimport logs are present.

Migration to new server from Window 2003 to 2008

I need a solution

We are in the process of hardware refresh.  On the old server netbackup 7.5.0.6 was installed to D:\Program files\veritas\netbackup but on the new server we are planning to install netbackup 7.5.0.6 to C:\Program files\veritas\netbackup.  Is it a must to install to the same path as the old one?   This is my first time doing this.  We are keeping the tape library (IBM System Storage TS3100), we are just replacing the master server on 2003 machine.  Please help me...........Need to know the implication of installing netbackup to different location on the new serve and how to get this done if it is possible Or what option do I have?

Please help.

Thanks!

CentOS Virtual Machine File-level Backups Failing

I need a solution

We have been running into an issue with our CentOS file-level virtual machine backups.

First I'll explain our environment and then the problem at hand.

NetBackup Version:  7.6.0.2

Master Server: SLES 11.3

Two media servers:  Both CentOS 6.5

Two NetBackup 5230 Appliances.

Guest OS affected:  We've seen this in several varieties of CentOS but specifically 6.5 is our main concern now.

File system format: ext4

In our VMWare policies we check the option to "Enable File Recovey from VM backup" on the VMWare tab and this causes backups for our CentOS machines to sit there and hang for around 15-45 minutes and timeout with a status 40 network connection broken.  We've seen the amount of time attributed to the client read timeout on the particular appliance that this tries to back up on.

After working a case with support it appeared the solution was to have the SYMCQuiesce tool installed on all guests.  This happened to be true for the single guest we tested with but on subsequent tests with different guests we are not having any success with file-level backups.  Even with the SYMCQuiesce tool installed we aren't having successful backups with the Enable File Recovery option checked.

I'm looking for information to see what others are doing, if anything to remedy this issue.  We have hundres of CentOS guests and we are currently doing full backups on these every night.

I can provide any further detail that is necessary.

Thank you.

VMD5_DIGEST line in clients file

I need a solution

We are looking at scripting the creation of job policies, since there is no API :(

We are running NBU 7.6.1 on RHEL 6.

It looks like simply coping the directory under <install_path>/db/class/ for a default policy and manually editing the clients, schedule, and include files is a pretty straight forward way to accomplish this. The only thing that concerns me is the VMD5_DIGEST line that is commented out. I did some googling and found an older article that described this line's importaince:

Another issue to be aware of is that many of NetBackup's configuration files now contain an MD5 signature. If you have scripts that edit configuration files directly, make sure these files don't contain an MD5 signature. (Look for a line that says #VMD5_DIGEST.) If they do, and you edit them without using a NetBackup command or the GUI - you'll render these files useless. For example, if you use vi or notepad to change any of the values in the file /usr/openv/netbackup/db/class/ /info, the policy in question will disappear from the NetBackup GUI and will no longer run. However, if you edited this file using a NetBackup command, it would be fine.

Src: http://searchstorage.techtarget.com/magazineConten...

Now the fact that it is commented out intrigued me so I  decided to test this and It looks like coping the structure does in fact create a new policy and that policy is visable in the GUI.

Is there anything to be concerned with dealing with that line? I Just want to make sure it isn't being used for anything else behind the scnenes.

Thanks,

hcart2 MPX question

I need a solution

NBU 7.6.0.3

i am having issues with backup performance and am looking at the default settings the vendor configured for our NBU server. in another thread, someone suggested that i have a look at max jobs per client, multiplexing, and STU (i still have to find what STU means :) ).

in my tape drive i found:

robot type: TLD

density: hcart2

max concurrent drives: 2 (i do have only 2 tape drives)

multiplexing is disabled but with a greyed out value of "1". fragment size is 1048575

with the above findings, if i want to increase backup performance should i change the values like enable multiplexing (my max jobs per client is now 4 from 99) ?

if i do change the data streams number, what should i do to make a configuration backup first of NBU in case the changes doesn't work and i want to restore the previous settings?

Unable to write to EMC DD

I need a solution

All of the jobs are failing with an 2074 error. All of my research points to 'Storage Pool' problems. I do not have any Storage Pools defined. Just one Storage Unit.

Here is the result of the only command that I have found that relates to a BasicDisk Storage Unit

C:\Program Files\Veritas\NetBackup\bin\admincmd>nbdevquery -liststs -U
Storage Server      : scfmfts001.ad.dcf.state.fl.us
Storage Server Type : BasicDisk
Storage Type        : Formatted Disk, Direct Attached
State               : UP
Flag                : AdminUp
Flag                : InternalUp
Flag                : SpanImages
Flag                : BasicStaging
Flag                : FragmentImages
Flag                : CatalogBackup
Flag                : Cpr
Flag                : RandomWrites
Flag                : FT-Transfer

The state is always UP, the error is always DOWN.

2/18/2015 7:43:38 AM - Error nbjm(pid=2480) NBU status: 2074, EMM status: Disk volume is down Disk volume is down(2074)

Am I missing something that is so obvious I can not see it?

Schedule name effect on Accelerator

I need a solution

Hi All,

I don't need a full technical explaination, just looking for a quick answer about adding a new full (manual run only) schedule into a policy that has been using accelerator.

Daily        (incremental)

Weekly    (normal full backup)

Special   (special full backup with a different retention)

backups have been running with the Daily and Weekly schedules with no issues.  Will running the Special as a manual backup run a traditional full backup or just the changes since the last Weekly job that ran?

No configuration device file exists". What files are thy referring to? Any help would be appreciated.

32bit RHEL 5.9 client backup to 64bit NetBackup Server v7.x...

I need a solution

Hi,

I have an N5220 master/media appliance running v2.5.2 (with NetBackup v7.5.0.5) and it can backup a 32bit RHEL 5.9 with NetBackup Client v6.5 (no patch) just fine.

However, when I bptestbpcd from a 64bit RHEL 6.4 master/media running NetBackup Server v7.6.0.1 - I get:

...
16:30:18.400 [23213] <2> put_string: cannot write data to network: Connection reset by peer (104)
16:30:18.400 [23213] <2> bpcr_put_vnetd_forward_socket: put_string /tmp/vnet-blah-blah failed: 104
16:30:18.400 [23213] <2> local_bpcr_connect: bpcr_put_vnetd_forward_socket failed: 24
16:30:18.400 [23213] <2> ConnectToBPCD: bpcd_connect_and_verify(xxxxx, xxxxx) failed: 24

16:30:18.400 [23213] <16> bptestbpcd main: Function ConnectToBPCD(xxxxx) failed: 24
<16>bptestbpcd main: socket write failed
...

Is anyone out there successfully backing-up a 32bit RHEL 5.9 NetBackup Client v6.5.x (patched) client to NetBackup v7.6.x.x ?

If so, which v6.5.x patch version works for you?

Many thanks.
