Restoring Data from Duplicated Tapes

I need a solution

Hi all,

During the past couple of weeks I have been importing and duplicating tapes that were used to backup systems such as Sharepoint and Exchange.

These were initially being backed up to many LTO2 tapes,  and I have now successfully completed duplicating and appending these backups to 3 LTO6 tapes.

Due to my lack of experience with Netbackup, and never having restored data before. I'd like to know how I can identify the various tape sessions that were created for the numerous environments that existed. Ultimately, I need to identify how I can rebuild an environment such as Sharepoint using the data I have to hand.

I'm using NB v6.0 on Server 2003.

Thanks,

Steve

NDMP restores very slow

I need a solution

Hello Experts,

I have certain experience with NDMP backup and restores. But they are painfully slow. I have worked in different data centers with backup taken on various disk based (dedupe) devices like data domain DD890, falconstor, symantec appliance 5320 and tape libraries IBM 4500, overland neo series and storagetek. filer backup  from netapp series and EMX celerra etc. Backup will run at a very good speed at about 140 MB/sec. Backups run from different volumes on various filers at good speed of approx size 2TB to around 45 GB. When restore request comes for complete volume restore like 200 GB etc, restore runs at fairly high speed and completes in 5-7 hrs approx but restore will always be painfully slow for a single file of 10MB etc.

i have faced this problem several occasions while doing restore from disk and tape. problem is not destination filer or destination volume neither network or backup LAN speed. There is no such detail related to this problem in symantec guide. So please spare sometime and explain this slow restore which takes place on filer side.

Best method to backup Exchange DAG DBs

I need a solution

1.    Our exchange servers are hosted on a VM; Currently we do backup of the passive exchange DBs from the DAG using “MS-Exchange server” policy type. We have been asked to enable GRT level backup for this backups, so that we can restore individual emails instead of restoring the entire DB. So we are looking into best options to backup this Exchange DBs with GRT. What is the best recommended way to backup this DBs with GRT?
2.    As this are hosted on VMs, we were thinking to enable VMware backups for this; so that, it can provide below mentioned advantages.
    1.    Single shot backup – 4 level recovery
        1.    VMDK – image level recovery
        2.    File level recovery
        3.    EDB file recovery
        4.    GRT level recovery
    2.    If configured, this data backups can be taken over a SAN mode which will reduce the backup window
    3.    If configured, accelerator can speed up the backups
    4.    If configured, it can truncate logs as well

Considering all this points, we are thinking, going with VMware level backup is the best option to backup this Exchange. Are we on a right track?

Vault no container inventory

I need a solution

Hi all,

I just finished the process of vault, but I realized that from the report -> container Invetory do a check on the data vault, there is no data in the tape.
Same if I go on the catalog and I select the tape when it was made the vault, it gives me the error: found no images or media matching the selection criteria.
On media, controlling the columns of the tape, on vault name I see the name of the process of vaulting, but about Date Vaulted there is no date, which in the other tape was made the vault where the date is present.
It seems as if the tape used was still open to be written.
How can I do more thorough checks to solve this problem?

Thanks!!

How to list files backed up by jobid

$

I need a solution

I know you can use bplist to list files backed up by date, but can you do this by jobid.  So I guess you can look at job start time and end time and then use bplist, but this involves an extra step and won't work if you have 2 jobs for the same client running at the same time.  So for instance, I hace added a new client to NBU with 2 policies - O/S policy and FS policy and I kicked both off at the same time, so am I able to list files for each job, so that I can verify I have not duplicated or missed any files.

Best practise relocating the staging directory for catalog backup

$

I need a solution

As per subject, I would like to free some space and the copy of the catalog backup that lives permanently (!) in staging  is what I'm targetting. This is several Gb of data I'd like to relocate. Currently its /usr/openv/db/staging and I'm Solaris.

I can see two routes:

1) Create a new directory on my target disk and symlink /usr/openv/db/staging to it.

2) Create a new directory on my target disk, modify vxdbms.conf entry VXDBMS_NB_STAGING = to point to it and restart ...something: the relational dbs.Or maybe the whole of netb to be safe.

I'd prefer option 1, simplest, least intrusive. Anyone tried this and knows for sure that the symlink will be happily followed by the catalog backup processes?

Additional benefit: it should be quicker as the staging process will be read disk A, write disk B as opposed to read and write disk A. Win-win I'm hoping.

I've used OS tools to demonstrate that the staging directory is not actively open, so I'm confident opton 1 should just work but input from the comunity always welcome.

Thanks in advance, Jim

PS Is there something amiss with Symantec forum generally as I seem to be able to google documents referring to the subject but the link fails to find the actual reference within Symantec eg: https://support.symantec.com/en_US/article.HOWTO91863.html ?

Delete parent job

I need a solution

We have just upgraded to NBU 7.6.1.1 and noticed the hierarchy display in the activity monitor, very cool. We like to keep a few days worth of the jobs completed in the display. We have noticed that if there is an error on one of the children and after a successful rerun, we like to clean up our activity monitor, but when we delete a paren job, it also deletes all of the children, successful or not. Is there a way to configure this so we can keep successful jobs in the activity monitor, but delete the errored parent?

Cannot run bpexpdate and other after nbac

I need a solution

Hey guys,

Clustered Netbackup 7.7 Master Server, running on Windows 2012.

After installing NBAC, I looks like it is running fine (login screen, permissions, roles, etc). However, I cannot run a "bpexpdate.exe", "bpimage.exe" and other commands on the command prompt (running as admin, obviously).

They all return something like:

expire not allowed: cannot connect on socket (25).

If I take nbac down (chanking registry key from AUTOMATIC to PROHIBITED), it works.

The user I am using has ALL the possible permissions on the authorization screen.

Any guesses?

Thanks a lot,

Exchange 2013 GRT Restore fails

$
0
0
I need a solution

Sorry for the long post but I want to provide as much detail as possible to make my issue easier to troubleshoot. I'm having issues restoring from a successful GRT backup. If you want to skip right to the error jump to the bottom of my post. I'll also provide the steps I took to set up the environment as well.

Here are the steps that I took to set up my environment to backup Exchange 2013 from: https://support.symantec.com/en_US/article.HOWTO73076.html I've marked or noted something for each step.

1. Netbackup Versions

   c. Exchange 2013 support began in 7.6.0.3 - All servers and clients are on 7.6.0.3

2. Disks supported - Granular backups MUST go to disk
Used this for storage ->   c. PDDO/MSDP
To achieve optimal backup performance on a PureDisk/MSDP configured storage unit, the default fragment size should be decreased to a size of 15GB.

3. OS compatibility -

   a. Windows must be a minimum version of 2003 R2

   b. For UNIX/LINUX media servers, confirm in the compatibility guide is it is supported at the level of NetBackup you are using

Master/Media server:

Netbackup 5220 Appliance Version 2.6.0.3 -  netbackup2 - running 7.6.0.3

Done - 4. Permissions - The Netbackup Client Service, Netbackup Legacy Client Service, and Netbackup Legacy Network Service (if using                                                   Netbackup 7.0.1. and higher) on each server must run as an account:

Done -  a. That is unique to Exchange -

Use Active Directory Users and Computers to create a user account that has a mailbox with a unique name.

A unique name is one that does not already exist within the Exchange Organization. This name cannot be contained as a set of characters in an existing name.

For example:EXCH1is entered as the unique mailbox name, and other mailbox names such as EXCH1BACKUP or BACKUPEXCH1 exist. The backup or restore of individual mailboxes will fail.

Done -  b. The account must be a Domain Admin

Done -  c. The account must have a mailbox associated with it and cannot be hidden from the Global Address List.

**Verify the account can send and receive email by sending and replying to a test email.**

If this is Exchange 2007, the account must reside on the server (or in the cluster). See TECH77721 for more information.

Done -  d. Grant the appropriate permissions within Exchange:

Exchange 2010/2013 - Exchange Organization Management **By default, this group contains Exchange Recipient Management, Public Folder Management, and Server Management.

Removing or modifying any of those roles will affect our backups.**

Done -  e. To ensure the backups are successful for Exchange 2013, EWS impersonation must be configured:

Command from Exchange PowerShell to check whether the role exist or not :

       Get-ManagementRoleAssignment -Role "EWSImpersonationRole"

       - If the role does not exist or has not been set for the Netbackup Account, refer to below instruction.

Command to create a new role called EWSImpersonationRole:

       New-ManagementRole -Name EWSImpersonationRole -Parent ApplicationImpersonation

Command to assign a user to EWSImpersonationRoleAssignment:

New-ManagementRoleAssignment -Role EWSImpersonationRole -User svcnetbackup EWSImpersonationRoleAssignment

Done -  f.  Exchange 2013 only - Enter the domain\account and password under the Netbackup Admin Console - Host Properties - clients - Exchange 2013 server's properties (to include all mailbox nodes and CAS servers)

Expand Windows Client - Highlight Exchange - Enter the domain\account and password under Exchange credentials

This requires that the account is assigned to "Replace a process level token" under the server's local security policy. A pop up will remind you of this, (even if it's already in place) whenever you modify the

Exchange Credentials in the Netbackup Admin Console.

Done -   g. Update the Distributed Application Mapping if this is a DAG, clustered, CCR or Off-host backup:

Go to, Host properties - master servers - Properties of master server - select Distributed Application Restore Mapping

Provide the name of the application host and the name of the component host, as follows:

       Environment         Application host                       Component host

       DAG                ExDag                                    excas1-dc1

                              ExDag                                    excas2-dc1

                              ExDag                                    exmbx1-dc1

                              ExDag                                    exmbx2-dc1

Done - 5. NFS configuration - this must be setup on media and Exchange servers (this includes CAS servers in Exchange 2010)

   c. Windows 2012 To enable services for Network File System, perform the following:

      1. Open the Server Manager.

      2. From the Manage menu, click Add Roles and Features.

      3. In the Add Roles and Features Wizard, on the Before You Begin page, click Next.

      4. On the Select installation, Click Next.

      5. On the Sever Selection page, click Select a server from the server pool and select the server. Click Next.

      6. On the Server Roles page, Expand File and Storage Services - File and iSCSI Services - Click Server for NFS role, Click Next.

      7. On the Features page, click Client for NFS. Click Next.

      8. On the Confirmation page, click Install.

      9. Open up Services, disable Server for NFS, enable Client for NFS set to automatic.

    10. Open a command prompt, run "sc config portmap start= auto"

   d. If media server is UNIX, no additional configuration is required - check the OS compatibility to ensure it is a supported platform - TECH59978

N/A -e. If firewall is used, open port 7394

6. Policy

   a. Attributes

       Policy Type should be MS-Exchange-Server.

Policy Storage should be a supported disk pool See #2 for more information.

Granular does not support backup to tape.

       Check the "Enable granular Recovery".

If this is Exchange 2007 cluster, Exchange 2010 or Exchange 2013, check "Perform snapshot backups" and specify VSS under options.

If this is and Exchange 2010/2013 DAG or Exchange 2007 cluster, specify the database backup source.

   b. Schedules -

Full schedule only - Granular backups do not support Incremental or Differential backups.

   c. Client -

       Exchange Server name

If this is a Microsoft cluster (Exchange 2003/2007) use the virtual cluster name

If this is a DAG (Exchange 2010/2013) use the DAG name

   d. Backup Selection -

       Exchange 2003 and 2007 use - Microsoft Information Store:\*

Exchange 2010/2013 Standalone use - Microsoft Information Store:\*

Exchange 2010/2013 DAG use - Microsoft Exchange Database Availability Group:\*

I've backed up a single Mailbox database as a test using the exmbx1-dc1 server as the client which backed up with GRT sucessfully (I can see down to the mailbox folders/messages).

7. Additional notes -

Done - a. Netbackup must be installed on all servers in Exchange. If clustered, use the node name not the cluster (or DAG) name when installing the Netbackup Client Software.

Done -  b. If using Exchange 2010/2013, the CAS servers must be configured with the same version of Netbackup and NFS must be configured. Restores will fail if not configured correctly.

Backing up to Disk -   c. If duplicating to tape or a non-supported disk (i.e. OST plug-in) to store the image, you must duplicate back to a supported disk location for the granular restore.

   d. Exchange 2003 and before uses MAPI for restore of individual items. Exchange 2007 requires Collaborative Data Objects 1.2.1 to be installed and Exchange 2010 uses Exchange Web Services on the CAS servers.

e. If using a load balancer for your Exchange CAS server, you will need to put a host file entry on your master and media server to point the load balancer names to 1 of your CAS servers.

Otherwise, the restore will fail with a communication error.

       For example:

CAS01 and CAS02 are the names of my CAS servers.

1.2.3.4 and 1.2.3.5 are the IP addresses of my CAS servers.

CASARRAY.COM is the name of my load balancer.

1.2.3.6 is the IP of the load balancer.

For the host file, choose to point the loadbalancername to CAS01 (only choose 1)

       1.2.3.4       CAS01        CAS01.domain         CASARRAY.COM

The load balancer shouldn't apply since we have a seperate network for backup and all the Exchange nodes and Netbackup appliance are on it and resolve to the correct IP on the backup network.

I have successfully been able to backup a single Mail Database with GRT by using exmbx1-dc1 as the client for a test. My problem is when I try to restore I get the following:

Using Alternate Network with the new "Preferred Network" feature

I need a solution

Hi guys,

I have the following scenario:

-Windows Master Server
Hostname VTXMASTER01
IP 10.78.0.193 (Production Network)

-Windows Media Server
Hostname VTXMEDIA01
IP1 10.78.0.194 (Production Network)
IP2 66.66.66.66 (Backup Network)
IP3 67.67.67.67 (Another Backup Network I will need to use eventualy - not important right now)

-Windows 2008 Client
Hostname VTXFPS02
IP 1 10.78.0.24 (Production Network)
IP 2 66.66.66.67 (Backup Network)

Requisite is quite obvious: would like the backup to pass via the 66.66.66.0/24 network.Tricky part is: customer would not like to use hosts file solutions & etc, so I went down and took a look at the new Preferred Network settings (replaces the REQUIRED_INTERFACE and REQUIRED_NETWORK ones).

Very confusing guide, but undersood I could basically insert the 66.66.66.0/24 network as a MATCH in both media server and client, and everything would work (the specified network would be matched/used as the preferred path between the media server and the client). However, no luck: the entry was skipped and the backup went via Prodution Network. Looks like bptestnetconn does not know the 66.66.66.0/24 path:

bptestnetconn -f --prefnet -H vtxfps02

------------------------------------------------------------------------
NBU IP_ADDRESS_FAMILY configured to use Remote Addresses:  IPv4(yes) IPv6(no)
FL:                VTXFPS02 -> 10.78.0.24                              :      0 ms SRC: ANY
------------------------------------------------------------------------

Tried changing the preferred network entry from MATCH to ONLY, but from this moment on the media server cannot connect to the client.

Any sugestions? I am using this feature the wrong way?

Thanks a lot in advance

Hello All,

We are planning to upgrade our Clustered Master Server from v7.5.0.7 to v7.6.x.x

Can you please suggest which version we have to upgrade to v7.6.x.x.

Will it be a direct upgrade to latest patch level or first we need to upgrade to v7.6

If possible please suggest us some upgrade steps for the same.

Hi,

I ran a policy manually and it got triggered. But only five drives were used for the child jobs and the sixth drive was not used. So one child job became in queue saying maximum job count has been reached for the storage unit. No backup was running on that drive.

I checked and found in the storage unit settings the "maximum concurrent write drives" is set to 6.

Also option "Limit jobs per policy" is not ticked in the policy setting.

Please suggest how to proceed so that that drive can be used.

Netbackup single file restore from linux

I need a solution

Hi,

I am experiencing an issue while doing single file restore from Linux VM.

I am using the following:

Netbackup 7.6.0.2 on Windows 2008 server

Backup policy - VMware (enabled file recovery)

What i am trying to do is restore a single file using Backup, Archive and Restore client on my Master server. I know that restore on the linux VM doesn't work if i don't have an agent installed, that is why the destination of the restore is the master server itself.

Nevertheless, my restore is failing momentarily with errors 2820, 2817,2800. The error number depends on the restore policy I am using (VMware, Standard, Flashbackup).

VMware policy restore error (2820)

FlashBackup-Windows policy restore error (2817)

Standard policy restore error (2800)

Can anyone help me with this issue?

Regards,

Jana
