VM backup failing with "Unable to access file since it is locked " issue

Hi All

VM backup failing with "Unable to access file  since it is locked <232>" issue

Am facing the above said issue frequently in my setup.,  Am having VMware backup host as my RHEL LINUX master itself., Since my NBU version is 7.6.0.4

Randomly my VMware backups are failing with "VM backup failing with "Unable to access file  since it is locked <232>"

While digging into this issue., I came to know that the bpfis is calling to delete snapshot process before bpbkar is done & ends., Due to that reason respective VM's disk is getting locked state.,

This issue results as Datastore to FULL & become the Production VM to unusable state.,

Everytime to fix this issue., Am killing the respective VMs bpbkar process manually using kill -9 command.,

But this is an bug reported in Symantec for 7.6.0.2 & 7.6.0.3 versions & they also suggested to upgrade it to 7.6.0.4 - Whereas my NBU version is 7.6.0.4.

(These links gave me an idea - but they confirmed the bug is addressed in 7604 version)

But still am getting this failure issue., Can you please suggest why this issue is occuring in 7.6.0.4 version.,

Am getting serious escalations due to this issue.., Can anyone help me out with this ??

I need a solution

Hello guys,

I have installed a new platform for netbackup :

  • Nbmaster : Windows Server 2008 R2 64x
  • Nbmedia : Windows Server 2008 R2 64x

I would like to backup all my VMware machines using my SAN environement, I have configured my SAN using the Symantec Guide for VMware.

I'am using my media server as Host Backup for VMware, it says all my LUNs and datastores (When checking with diskmanager) from our EMC Array.

But all my VMware backup Job are failling whit this error :

"Error opening the snapshot disks using given transport mode: san Status 23"

bptestbpcd binary showing 0KB size. Master is 7.6 . Can not copy it from any other as we dont have any other master with this version. Is theer any other way (downloading etc?)

We are getting Database server is down, while opening admin console.

nbemmcmd command output

C:\Program Files\Veritas\NetBackup\bin\admincmd>nbemmcmd.exe -getemmserver

The function returned the following failure status:
database server is down, check for low disk space (23)

Windows Partial Backups status 1

I need a solution

Hi All, 

I am having trouble backing up the windows file server and keep getting particaly successfull status. I know these are temporary files and should not be backed up. I can also do the exclude of '~$' but I want to resolve instead of exclusion. 

if anyone can suggest a quick workaround that will be great.

Windows 2008 R2 Backup and Recovery

Greetings,

Master server - Netbackup 5230 appliance - 7.6.1.1 and all applicable patches for the appliance.

Windows 2008 R2 client - 7.6.1.1 client version

We've had many issues with trying to backup and recovery a Windows server. We can't do BMR because we'd have to have MANY BMR servers just to recover the various Windows boxes we support. My team supports over 1,200 Windows backup clients, 1,100 Linux clients, and over 600 Unix clients. We backup about 3.4 PB per month. Now that this is all out of the way.....back to the issue I'd like to find an answer for.

I've been told that Netbackup can both backup and recover a Windows server in 7.6x just by using the normal Windows backup policy, which is supposed to backup the system state and such. I'm not a Windows engineer so I'm having to work with our Windows team to try and find a true Netbackup solution to this.

Historically, the windows team would run a windows backup of the system state and have that on a data drive attached to the windows server. We'd run a backup of that server (all local drives), to include the system state. They would format the server, lay down a the same O/S and patches, install the exact same Netbackup client software and we'd run the restore as found in the old 2003 recovery doc. Restore of the server, it's applications, and the system state back to how it was before the rebuild has NEVER been successful.

I've been tasked with finding out how to backup a windows box and be able to restore it without having 500 different BMR servers sitting on the data center floors. 

Please advise.

Client, MSEO and TL encryption

NBU version ; 7.6.1
    We are using client encryption for most of our servers.

I am aware that client encryption enabled in the policy consumes more CPU space in the client and takes a long time for completion of backup.

Dedupe is difference value is large with and without encryption enabled.

Moreover, each LTO6 tape (Hardware compression is enabled) consumed around 3.9TB for data without encryption. Only 2.4TB is consumed per tape with encryption enabled. Believe, hardware compression doesnt work well with encrypted data.

Believe if MSEO is enabled, amount of storage consumed by tape wont change much. However, puredisk dedupe may work as expected.
 

Which is the best way of using encryption? We dont have requirement of encrypting data before the tapes leave datacenter.
Is TL encryption the best way to save space. Believe, it starts to encrypt the data after compressing it.

Server is in partially connected state in Symantec NetBackup OpsCenter Analytics

Hi All,

We have issue conncting one of our servers in OpsCenters. 

Netbackup version of master server is 6.5.6

OpsCenter we are using is 7.6.0.3 

We see data collection is failing for Volume, Volume Group, Volume Pool

Below is the data collection status for above components.

Failed to get connect to event channel :org.omg.CORBA.TRANSIENT: Retries exceeded, couldn't reconnect to null vmcid: 0x0 minor code: 0 completed: No
 

We have the same issue for one of our other master server running on windows 2000 with netbackup version 6.5 as well.

Any sugestions please

Verifying Stucked Backup Jobs

Everyday I find Backup Jobs greater than 20 hours in active status, and Id like to verify if the job is stucked (command line option).

Netbackup processes going down

I need a solution

Hi All, nbvault process going down every night but not at same time which is affecting my catalog backup failing with 150. I checked various log but cant find any clue. Could you guys please help me on this, what needs to be checked and where. 

Also, on some days all the processes are going down and coming up by itself, due to this all the backups are getting killed with EC 50. Similarly i cant find any issue but only in VCS engine logs which says

"clean procedure did not complete within the expected time"

"monitor procedure finished successfully after failing to complete within the expected time for (8) consecutive times"

"Agent is calling clean for resource(NetBackup_$service) because  4 successive invocations of the monitor procedure did not complete within the expected time"

Some Processes are DOWN while others are UP
Following Process are found DOWN: bprd nbjm
Following Process are found UP: vmd bpdbm nbpem nbevtmgr nbemm nbrb NB_dbsrv nbaudit

Looking for NetBackup processes that need to be terminated.

Stopping bpcompatd...
Stopping bpdbm...

What to do next at Netbackup Admin Console

I need a solution

Hi there,

We have to restart tape library after replacing a tape drive. Have not configured the new drive in NBU.

However, though there's a lot of working tape drives in the library, tape backup is failed.

Error is No media is available: unable to allocate new media fro backup, storage unit has none available.

Please help. thanks.

VSS cache files

Master Server : Solaris 10, Cluster, NBU 7.6.0.3

Client: Windows 2008 R2, NBU 7.5.0.4

If WOFB is enabled for this client, then on windows client where can I locate the VSS cache files created by NBU.

Does NBU store any type of files in C:/System volume information ?  if yes, then is there anyway to check if that file belongs to NBU?

Hi,

We need to know how is the version of the Netbackup to support ESXi 5.0, 5.1 and 5.5. 

Actually we have Netbackup 7.5.0.1 in the backup host, Netbackup 7.6.0.4 in the Master and Netbackup 7.6.0.1 in another master. This host connected to the VCenter with ESX 5.0 and now the support of this VCenter upgrade to 5.5.

We will need to upgrade our Netbackup Masters and BackupHost?

Net backup schedule trick

I need a solution

I got a request to configure weekly backup and monthly backups for one client.

Where Weekly should be - Every Saturday 6:00PM  & Monthly last Saturday of the month 6:00PM. And the Weekly backup shouldnt run on last saturday as monthly schedule.

So I created

For Weekly

New Scheulde --> Calender  --> Calender Schedule --> Recurring Week Days & selected 1st,2nd & 3rd Saturday.

For Monthly

New Scheulde --> Calender  --> Calender Schedule --> Recurring Week Days & selected Last Saturday.

Here the problem is some month has 5 saturdays, In that month if I schedule like above 4th Saturday Backup is missing. Considering that point and if I add 4th Saturday in weekly schedule for the month which as 4 saturday's on the 4th saturday both Weekly and monthly is running. How to over come from this?
