Netbackup 7.6 install on linux VCS cluster

I need a solution

Installing Netbackup on a fresh vcs cluster, once installed on the primary node I will need to install the maintance patch and client does it have to be done in a specific order?
Secondly as its the only node in the cluster do I need to not need to freeze or offline the cluster resource group to install the client and maintance patch?
Finally on the secondary node install netbackup then it join cluster resource group, do  I need to freeze the cluster then take it offline to install the client and maintance patch? Please advise what is the correct way?

I have taken a look at the HA& and clustering guides  looking for further clarification.

I need a solution

**** Moved to new discussion from https://www-secure.symantec.com/connect/forums/netbackup-catalog-backup-question  ***

Hi,

Are you able to point me to a KB article or even another thread that describes setting up a catalog backup to write two sets of tapes in two different sites and records the details of both sets of tapes in the DR file?

We have a clustered master server configuration across two sites and wish to protect the catalog to a remote site no matter which site the master server is active from.

Our media servers in site one have no access to tape drives in site two and vice versa.

I've tried searching, reviewing the admin guides and even experimented locally without much success.

Many thanks,

Alun.

problem marking "target" mode on ports in RHEL 4

I need a solution

The fiber card was replaced in the FT media server, I followed the step by step instructions from the guiide on "marking target ports" in RHEL. The issue is when I run the command /usr/openv/netbackup/bin/admincmd/nbhba -modify -wwn [ wwn string] -mode target it changes all the nodes to target. Same thing if I switch them to Initiator it changes them all not just the 2 that I need as target. The system has 2- 2port QLogic 2342 in stalled. Any suggestions? Thanks

I do not need a solution (just sharing information)

Hello,

I have very stupid kind of question. We have Linux server given us as master. It has two IPs one in prod network one in backup network.

Prod network name:- master

Backup network interface name: - master-bkp

I have configured the installed the server with the name with "master". Now I am thinking to uninstall NBU and install every thing with "master-bkp".

Right now we have added two DB backups in this new master server. How wise it is to do. Datadomain is also on bkp network.

Anyone see this "Do you want to use RSH instead? [y,n] (n) " before

Hi All,

When I installed new media server 7.5.0.6 on linux redhat  2.6.32-431.23.3.el6.x86_64, it asked a question: "

sfmsap1blpc  sfmsap1clpc nodes are not ssh equivalent
Passwordless SSH is not configured between cluster nodes
It is recommended to use SSH for secure communication
Do you want to use RSH instead? [y,n] (n) n

after I said Yes , I think itnstallation failed because I am not able to see /usr/openv/netbackup/bp.conf

Anyone see that message before and how can I fix that issue? Thank you.

Want to take a copy of back up off site

I need a solution

We have about 3 TB of data across 4 virtual servers running Redhat Linux on an IBM Blade Center. Net Backup for back up on IBM LTO Autoloader.  Compliance requires 15 years of Data to be available.

Q 1.  I would like to take a full back up out at least once a year.  Do I need additional tape drive to do that or the single drive of the autoloader help me create a copy that can be taken off site?

How do I have an encrypted NDMP backup to tapes?

I need a solution

Hi,

We have to take an encrypted NDMP tape backups from a NetApp filer connected via fiber to LTO 4 tape library. Backups jobs (schedules) should handle by Symantec Netbackup software.

My questions are about encrypting the data before the data goes on tape.

1. Is encryption possible? If so, who controls the encryption keys?

2. What sort of licenses do we require in Symantec Netbackp?

3. Do we need to buy an encryption kit for our tape library?

4. Since the actual data path is through NetApp Filer to tape, does it really require to have encryption license in Symantec Netbackup?

5. What is the minimum version of NDMP & Netbackup supported?

6. How can this system be set up?

Many thanks

Hi there

I am facing an issue here with my vmware backups and maybe someone can help me.

Here is configuration:
master server -solaris 10

media server - windows 2008R2

netbackup 7.1

vmware version 5.5

policy type flashbackup-windows

In this policy there are 4 VMs

2 of them have vmtools in older version (prior to vmware migration from 4 to 5.5) and they show no error when trying to check what to restore in file and folder tree view

Other 2 had 3rd party ones (all 4 are some kind of linux boxes) and showed error stated in title of this post

I faced the error when those 2 had 3rd party vmtools installed and thought that that was the reason. I installed current vmtools, but  I still face the same error.

Interesing thing is, when I choose to restore from virtual machine backup, I do get whole vmdk file available for those 2 machines that show error (this proves that I can restore whole VM, rather than specific files and folders from this client).

I've checked and client name appears in console in capital letter (the same it appears in vmware infrastructure and I am stating the same name in BAR console).

Any thoughts?

thanks

backup_exit_notify help needed

I need a solution

Dear Team, I was in this forum for an help in configuring mail notification. I have configured notification by backup_exit_notification script and blat. However, as per the client's demand I have modified the script so that the mail notification in the subject line carries clear information of success / failure of backup. However after I made that change, the email notofication stopped. Here is the script after modification. I have attached the modified script

If I am running the blat command used in script from command line as below it is working and I am receiving mail.

blat %OUTF% -to  xxxxxxxxxx@abcgroup.com  -s "Backup for %1 : Policy %2 : on %DATE% has been %STATUS%" -q

However, when the same command is inserted in the last part of backup_exit_notify script, and if I execute the script from command prompt it is not sending mail.

Suspecting some errors in the script I have fired the command like below from command line.

~bin:> backup_exit_notify >c:\mail.log 2>&1 .

However no error messages are found logged in mail.log.

Could any one help to fix the problem with this script.

Thanks and regards

Shinoj

"optimized backup..." attribute doing a rehydrated / normal client backup on deduped volume

I need a solution

Hello,

I have selected "enable optimized backup of Windows deduplicated volumes"  attribute on a policy where dedup'ed data on a Win2012R2 server should be backed up. The problem is that the data is being backerd up is accually nondeduped / rehydrated / "full" size when I run a full backup. 7.6TB instead of 4.5TB is being transfered...

The NFS server and client is installed and the NetBackup Client Service is running as local admin according to the instructions:

http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?pag...

And according to the 7.6 Admin guide my selection list in the policy is \system volume information\dedup (at the top) and then the actual data folder.

The target storage is basic disk (not MSDP) and I have "TIR restore... with Move detection" enabled on the policy.

The Master/Media server is running 7.6.0.3 on Win2008R2. The client (with the deduped data) is running 7.6.0.3 on Win2012R2.

Thanks for any suggestions!

Hello all,

For some time now we get intermittent backup failures in the exchange 2010 DAG backup.
The failures only occur in the full backup (on the weekend), incremental backups during the week run without problems.

We see an error in the netbackup activity monitor: socket write failed(24)

When looking in the applicatation log on the exchange client we see 2 errors at the time of the failure:

Symantec Tech Note

We found:
http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=TECH136986
and we set the shadow copy to: "No limit". this was set only on the disks with the database (both active and passive)
We did this three weeks ago.
The backups ran fine for two weeks and it looked that this solved the problem.
But no... this weekend the problem was back again.

In all cases when we had the failure we did a rerun of the failed databases an the rerun always ended good.

Our enviroment:

  • Master: Windows 2008 R2, Netbackup version 7.6.0.3
  • Media servers: Windows 2008 R2, Netbackup version 7.6.0.3
  • The policy is set to backup the passive copy and if not available the active copy
  • Snapshot method: VSS
  • Exchange 2010 DAG, Netbackup version 7.6.0.3
  • It is a 4 node DAG
  • The Database has an active and pasive copy
  • We only backup the Database

Any help on where we can look to resolve this problem would be much appreciated

David

The SMTP server does not like the name nroracle@csc.com.
Have you set the 'To:' field correctly, or do you need authorization (-u/-pw) ?
The SMTP server response was -> 554 Relay rejected for policy reasons.

MSDP Data migration

I need a solution

Hello all,

I currently have an issue where a media server (Windows, MSDP, 7.6.0.3) is running slow due to the link between the master and media servers.

What I would like to do is migrate all the backup data from this media to the master which is also another media server so that I can then rebuild the original media server as it's own netbackup domain master/medi server.

Is this possible and what would be the best way to go about this?

Thanks!

Chris

Netbackup installation steps for linux vcs cluster

I need a solution

Hi Can anybody help me validate steps to install Netbackup 7.6 server, client  and the latest patch on a newly build linux VCS cluster. I have read the HA guide and Netbackup clustered Admin Guide however I need clarification on the progresses involved. Please confirm what is correct below and if any of the steps are incorrect then please correct them  for me.

Install Netbackup 7.6 on the Primary node with virtual IP and virtual name.

During the install stage will the install request the physical name, IP and NIC name.

Once the install is complete do I go ahead and install the client binaries and maintance patch without freezing the cluster etc.

Start and complete the Netbackup 7.6 server install at completion Do I need to freeze the cluster, put it in read and write then take it offline to install the client binaries and Maintance Patch.

After Installing Netbackup ,  maintance patch and client on the primary active node  create the required symbolic links.

/usr/openv/netbackup/db  ->  /opt/VRTSnbu/netbackup/db

/usr/openv/db/staging    ->  /opt/VRTSnbu/db/staging

I need a solution

Per the documentation:

"By default, all jobs are processed before more jobs are submitted. Increase this interval to allow NetBackup to submit more jobs before all jobs are processed"

There are multiple ways to throttle NBU jobs.  For me, I restrict the number of current streams at the device level .  What is the downside if I change the default value (which is 5 minutes) to some greater value - or even to disable this parameter altogether?

Many thanks in advance!
