Backup exec restores support in Netbackup

I need a solution

We have just migrated to Netbackup from Backup Exec . However we still have a large number of tapes stored away in backup exec format which will need restoring from in Netbackup .

We have developed a process to import Backup exec Media in Netbackup with the help of the link below

http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=TECH125069

However i understand Backup exec restores will not be supported in the next major Netbackup  version release . If this is the case we will have to import ALL our backup exec tapes now which will be a nightmare

I need a solution

Hello world,

NBU VmWare technote confusion

I need a solution

Hello All,

Our Windows VMWare backups are failing with status cannot connect on socket(25).

I refered to the technote below , but I am a bit confused by it. "http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=TECH193946"

It states VM Backup Host: mybackup-host ,

and in the solution we have :Add mybackup-host to the VM backup host's server list should allow the backup to start.

My confusion is if the VM Backup host is mybackup-host itself , then should it be added in its own list , or am I missing something here.

Hyper-v NetBackup only of production copy of VMs (not the replicated VMs)

I need a solution

Am I missing something or is NetBackup way behind in Hyper-V support compared to VMWare.  We have a VMWare and a Hyper-V implementation and we have replication for both for DR purposes (SRM for the one and native hyper-v replication for the other).  Why is NetBackup smart enough not to backup the VMWare placeholder templates (replication placeholders) at the target site and still pull in the actually running VMs at that site, but it's not smart enough to do the same for Hyper-V replicated VMs.  Instead, it will go ahead and backup all of the VMs on the host being backed up, regardless of whether they are actually the powered off DR target of a replicated production VM on another host.

Also, for VMWare, Netbackup is smart enough to find the right vCenter that is managing a VM and back it up, regardless of the host it is on.  It does this by us having the vCenter creds created outside of the policy - you merely use those creds implicitly when you edit a policy and browse for the VMs to backup.

Why couldn't the same thing be done for Hyper-V?  As it stands, I have to have separate policies now to backup each VM that is effectively managed through a different Hyper-V since the Hyper-V itself is tied to a specific policy.  Now I know everyone is going to say, just backup the replicated copy and call it good, but it's not good.  I want a fully quiesced copy of the VM at the current production site being backed up, not the replicated copy that I'm not quite fully sure of the current state (and can't be, because it's POWERED OFF).  Safer to make the backup of the currently running VM...

Lot's of questions, hopefully someone can respond since I don't see any documented strategy from Symantec on the backup of Hyper-V in a replicated DR scenario, relative to how it is done for the VMWare counterpart...

Media Server

I need a solution

Hello Experts,

We have the below enviornment.

1:- Master Server:- Windows 2008 R2 (Physical) 7.6

2:- Media Server:- Solaris 11 (Virtual)

3:-Media Serer :- Solaris 11 (Virtual)

4:- 300+ Clients with Windows and Solaris

Only 1 tape library with 1 robot.

We are taking backups through our master server means storage units are on enterprise master server. One day our both the two media servers were down still backups were happening as storage units were on master. So below are the queries.

1:- I need to understand the role of media server as we are doing backups without media server? I am very much confused with the role of media server.

2:-  do we need to install drivers for library on these 2 media servers. SSO is already there. I tried to check the devices attached to the solaris media server through prtdiag -v command and could not find any drives attached/anything on these virtual media servers?

3:- How to install the media server steps if we make one more media server on virtual solaris server?

4:- Do we just need to install media server software on the O/S and it works as media server or any other configuration such as robot/drives drivers etc needs to be  configured on a media server?

Thanks,

I need a solution

I have a customer attempting to do a DR test from the DR NetBackup server.  When he runs the command

sudo /usr/openv/netbackup/bin/bplist -t 4 -C usscinf143 -R -l /

It only shows a small subset of the backup images I can see looking at the catalog and bpimagelist from the master itself.  When he runs bpclimagelist he sees the the big list as well..  Here is the other command he ran,

sudo /usr/openv/netbackup/bin/bpclimagelist -client usscinf143 -ct 4

I don't have access to the client side.  I ran both of those commands from the master and confirmed I got different results.  I've done a little digging but have not come up with any answers yet.

cannot remove volume from AdvancedDisk pool

I need a solution

Creating a new v7.6.0.4 system and put wrong volume name in AdvancedDisk pool.  After realizing the error, successfully added the correct volume.  There are no images on the wrong volume.  Can't seem to delete the it however:

DSM has encounted an invalid state for the following object: /wrongname

Tried removing the Disk Pool and start over, but there are now some images on the correct volume, and expiring them doesn't seem to help either.

Searching prior posts & only way out is to get custom script from support?   Seems like a bad bug to me!  Why have -deletedv switch if it doesn't work?

I need a solution

Hello Experts,

We have one solaris 11 servers. It has many small files it has taken more than 12 hours to take the backup on tape and still running. Drives are free and no issue with the drives. Speed we could see on the policy it shows1 mbps that is rather slow.

These server has many small log files i believe thats why its taking time. So somebody has suggessted to TAR these all files and then this would become one file and backup would be fast.So pls let me know to troubleshoot this slow client issue and can we consider this tar option as solution.

Thanks,

NetBackup LiveUpdate null share...not quite necessary

I do not need a solution (just sharing information)

It seems that contrary to documentation that is floating around in various articles about NetBackup fileshare source, you don't necessarily have to configure and use null shares for UNC paths.  In looking at this the other day, I quickly decided to add the domain computer account for the server to the permissions on the share that I setup for the LiveUpdate path.  Windows will, by default, try to use the computer domain account for any localsystem initiated outbound traffic for UNC if the computer is part of a domain.

The result is that now my servers that are part of our domain can utilize our NetBackup LiveUpdate server via UNC file share path without null shares being setup.  As we only have a few "appliance"-type servers that aren't bound to our domain, they are just handled manually...

I know for sure this works on 2008 and 2012, not completely sure about 2003, but it's worth a try before implementing null shares.

monitor scratch tape in netbackup master server

I need a solution

I am using Netbackup Enterprise 7.5 running in Windows Server 2008 R2.

I know there a script can check the balance of scratch tape in library -> "vmquery -bx -a | findstr -i scratch | findstr -v NONE"

Question:

1. I have TLD(0) and TLD(1). How to separate the report for both TLD?

2. How to input the script to calculate the number of tape? I have barcode with CMxxxx in TLD(0) and CZxxxx in TLD(1).

I have gonr through OpsCenter but no such feature available.

Please help. Thanks.

tpautoconf -t output related to drive down alert varies every time

I need a solution

Could anyone explain my query please ..

We have one windows media server ..windows 2208 with netbackup 7.5 version, where drives are shared.

the thing is that we frequently get drive down alerts..

when i check the vmoprcmd -d/tpconfig -d  output  it will show all the 7 drives with couple of drives loaded with backups..

when ever i check the purticular drive which is getting down by its correct drive index no. it will show UP in the vmoprcmd -d / tpconfig -d outputs..

but i am unavailble to see that purticular drive in OS level that is tpautoconf -t or scan command.

But moreover if i check in the device monitor again i can see all the 7 drives of the media server...

Again after some time i am able to see all the 7 drives in tpautoconf -t command output.

1)Could you please explain why this this kind of scenario happening why there is variation in tpautoconf -t command out i was observing from quite some time..

2) why we are getting purticular drive down alert but once i see the vmoprcmd /tpconfig out it shows UP, but not visible in tpautoconf -t output.

3) what is difference when drives are shared in SSO or if they are not shared in SSO.

Can anyone in the forum explain it clearly ....
