Scheduled image cleanup not running for tape backups

I need a solution

Hi,

Master  - Suse Linux 11 SP3 ,Netbackup 7.5.0.5

We are facing a issue with image cleanup job not running automatically for tape backups and due to this the catalog disk is gettign filled up. It completes fine if we run it manually using bpimage -cleanup -allclients and deletes expired records to free up space .

Also as the image clean up job does not start so does not see any indication of it in Admin log .For disk based backups to Advance disk and MSDP the image cleaup is running fine .

I am not able to recall a switch in nbpemreq command using which you can check that when the next image cleaup is scheduled to run .It generally runs after 12 hours which is mentioned in host properties but not  running at the moment

Please if anybody can suggest where we can check in to troubleshoot the issue ....?

Regards,

Abhishek

Fundamental design requirement for a successful VM (VMware) backup with NetBbackup 7.5

I need a solution

Hello all,
Am new to Netbackup, I would appreciate if I could get the following info so as to get started on a solid ground. I need the following pls:

1. All the configuration requirements for a media server that needs to backup VMs on shared storage - FC SAN,with nine ESX hosts belonging to three different esx clusters. The requirement should include the different options for backing up the vms,Zoning requirements/consideration,best backup policy type. Please note also that the infrastructure has upto 400 vms each having vmdk files with sizes ranging from 10GB to 1.8TB.

2. Best practice interms of configuration choice especially for the media server.

3. A design diagram/document showing how a media server (one media server) should be configured in a VMware ESX

4.1 environment with one vCenter and nine ESX hosts.

5. A complete document explaning how robot (tape library work-physical) and how netbackup uses the tapes/tape library.

Please note that I have read all the documentations provided by Netbackup especially the ones for VMware admin and Windows admin. What I need is a typical design advice from you guys that are having a successful VMware backup using netbackup 7.5. What is your media server esx host and FC SAN relationship or configuration like?
What backup policy are you using? - VMware or Flashbackup-Windows?

How many vms does a single policy has ?

Thanks in anticipation.

Performance issues on SQL Server due to Netbackup

I need a solution

In one of our client environment, we have Netbackup 7.5.0.5 performing backups of the whole SQL Server VM using VMWare type backup (like snapshot as per our Intel tech description). When these backups are runnings, the system kinda freezes up IO activity and its impacting SQL Server.

Since I don't have any knowledge (I am a SQL guy), I would like to know there are any best practice recommendations from Symantec for performing backups on SQL Server. If these type of snapshot backups are not recommended and instead use netbackup agent to perform windows type backup ?

Any advise on Netbackup related to SQL would be really appreciated.

Transport mode in activity monitor for VADP

I need a solution

Is there a quick method we can use to see what transport mode a VADP backup is using without opening the job details? Like maybe a column in the activity monitor?

We have done the zoning so that the VADP jobs use san but also added nbd to the secondary transport mode, to reduce failures if a VM is moved to a different datastore that hasn't been zoned.

Deduplication on a Master Server - MSDP or Puredisk

I need a solution

Hi!

Generelly speaking, is Puredisk the best/the only solution for deduplicaion on a Master Server, in a Netbackup 7.5.x environment? I have read here that MSDP is not recommended to run on a Master Server - only on dedicated Media servers.

http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?pag...

"- DO NOT configure MSDP on NetBackup (NBU) master servers, OpsCenter servers or servers that are the master and opscenter server. Performance suffers significantly, particularly during busy backup periods."

I need a solution

Am starting a new project where they using Volume shadow copy disk for all shared folders. VMs are used to provide file services. I have not been able to find anything about what would happened to Volume shadow copy snapshots when I do backups of these VMs using Netbackup 7.5 and vStorage API.
1) Do I need to include the size of Vol shadow copy snapshots in my full backup size calculations?
2) How are these snapshots backed up in general and specifically during an incremental backup?

BMR Restore to alternate network failing

I need a solution

I am trying to restore a Linux BMR client to some new hardware, albeit the same on a different network.  I boot of the prepared boot iso; it asks all the questions about client name (I made it the same), it's IP address (different), same master server name but again, a different address.

I have prepared the boot client on the master server; changing the mac address and ip address.

It fails just after "Retrieving client config from BMR Master sever ..." with ERROR: Failed to retrieve "/tmp/hex-number-of-new-address.conf" and throws me down to the sh-4.1# prompt.

For the life of me I am unable to work out for my source client how I can prep for restore using a different IP address?  Can anyone assist please?

Thanks.

available_media script incorrectly lists a volume's status as DBBACKUP

I need a solution

Hello,

I would like to submit a problem I meet with one of my masters (Solaris 7.5.0.6)

in this domain there is one master (Solaris 7.5.0.6) and one media server (Windows 2K8 7.5.0.6)

My problem is that the tapes used by the media server are always shown with a DBBACKUP status in the available_media  script output

After checking the available_media in detail first, it appears that if a tape is not found in bpmedialist -mlist -l output, available_media will display a DBBACKUP status for this particular tape

here is an example of the error with a specific tape B08121 I have

Restore issue with media

I need a solution

Hi all,

I am facing restoration issue.

When I am trying to restore the data from tape, the restore job is in active state but, it is "awaiting resource". Even though the media is available in library.

This is found in job Detailed Status.

For this I have performed Robotic Inventory, still it is showing the same message.

When I have checked the media status in command line using "bpmedialist", it is showing Server Group=UNRESTRICTED_SHARING_GROUP.

For the above one, in Master server host properties, I have disabled, "Enable unrestricted media sharing for all media servers" option.

Still I am facing the same issue.

Can Any one suggest on this issue please, It would be helpful in resolving this issue.

Thanks in advance,

Sam.
