NetBackup 7.1 VSS Snapshot Exchange 2010 Role Requirements

I need a solution

Our Exchange 2010 VSS snapshot backups are occasionally fail and leave the Exchange VSS writers in a failed or 'waiting for completion' state.  Failures coincide with Event Log entries regarding RBAC rights failures:

Application\MSExchange RBAC (17)

Time: 12/2/2013 9:39:57 PM. Event description: (Process w3wp.exe, PID 1648) "RBAC authorization returns Access Denied for user domain.com/Servers/OU/EXCMB05. Reason: No role assignments associated with the specified user were found on Domain Controller DC02.domain.com"

Should the client run as the backup service account instead of SYSTEM?  The documentation doesn't state anything about requiring it AFAIK.

San Media Server

I need a solution

Hello

Can somebody explain what would be required with following setup...

I have a  Sun Solaris master/media server which connects to a fibre library with 2 x lto fibre drives. Instead of pushing the backups over the network I would like to make the two san attached m4000 servers (which are netbackup clients at present) into SAN media servers and backup over fibre.

Firstly, I assume I will need the following licenses:

·         2 x San Enterprise Media Server or is this just an Enterprise Client ?

·         SSO  (As I will also be running network backups to the master/media server)

I then would like to know if you need a dedicated fibre port on the sun servers to write directly to the tape library, as I was concerned it needed a specific qlogic driver which might affect mounted luns? (At present we use the native solaris driver on the pci fibre channel card)

Also, I assume that you do need to configure the SAN Media client if it is already a SAN media server.

Thanks

Ian

Hi,

I have a Windows 2003 R2 x64 SP2 server with Oracle 10.2.0.4 and a Windows 2008 R2 Standard x64 SP1 with NBU 7.5.0.5.

I have a problem with RMAN backup (filesystem backup works fine), after “channel ch00: starting piece 0” line there is no error message, but nothing happens.

Nothing was changed on the servers and RMAN backup works until now.

Any help??

Thanks in advance!

NDMP Backup failing with error 86 and 52

I need a solution

hi all,

would like to seek assistance as one of my NFS clients is encountering errors 86 and 52.  this client has 2 policies in which only one of them is having issues.  this client is also the media server with NDMP.  it encounters the errors regardless of the tapes and drives it uses.  but i've noticed that it always stops on a certain NDMP path as shown below.  does it mean it couldn't connect to that path?

12/03/2013 11:58:32 - begin writing
12/03/2013 12:05:28 - Error ndmpagent (pid=24033) NDMP backup failed, path = /vol/usnavsltefil01_v1/home
12/03/2013 12:05:29 - Error bptm (pid=24040) io_ioctl_ndmp (MTBSF) failed on media id W01844, drive index 46, return code 7 (NDMP_IO_ERR) (bptm.c.21479)
12/03/2013 12:05:30 - Error ndmpagent (pid=24033) MoverGetState called with no session
12/03/2013 12:05:31 - Error ndmpagent (pid=24033) NDMP backup failed, path = /vol/usnavsltefil01_v1/home
12/03/2013 12:05:31 - Error ndmpagent (pid=24033) MoverGetState called with no session
12/03/2013 12:05:29 - end writing; write time: 0:06:57
media position error (86)

the drives have been checked for errors or stuck tapes but found nothing.  but when used by the backup, the drive paths seems to go down.

Bonjour,

Linux client, log when backup jobs is completed.

I need a solution

Hi.
Is there any way on a Netbackup Linux client to reliably log each time a backup job is completed? The reason for this is that I need to trigger a process on the Linux client when the backup jobs is done (by for example parse a log file). The log level on the client is "Global Logging Level 3" with Robust Logging.

If there is a reliable way to log it on the master server, that is just as fine.

Master Server is 7.5.0.5 on Win2008R2.
Linux Client is 7.1.0.2 on CentOS.

Effects of nbdevconfig on a global master server

I need a solution

Our backup infrastructure contains a global master, with regional media servers. I'm looking to begin using synthetic backups, and am being told I will need to run the following nbdevconfig commands on the master server.

nbdevconfig –changests –storage_server <name> -stype DataDomain –setattribute OptimizedImage (for each DataDomain) (We are the only office using DataDomain)

nbdevconfig -changedp -dp <diskpool name> -stype DataDomain -setattribute OptimizedImage (for each DiskPool) (Disk pools are separated be regions/offices)

I'm curious what effect running these commands will have (if any) on the other regional backup environments ?

Hi folks

when we take backup of SQL databases on any windows server. In logs it shows us various details along with database names which it has backedup
all application databases and systel databases as well model, master and msdb.

When i go to client server and open NBU Ms SQL agent to perform restore of a database I only get to see backup date and images of application database.
It do not show any system database (model, master and msdb). Hence i can not perform restore them to any other server or same server.

1) How can i restore system database to any other server or same server.

2)How can i take backup of mentioned files without putting database in down state.

Legacy log files

I need a solution

RHEL 5.9, 64 bit Master Server.  Windows 2008 Standard 64 bit Media Servers.   NBU 7.5.0.6 all around.

1.  Where can I get good explanations of the kind of information I can expect to find in a given legacy log?

2.  Where can I find detailed information about where and what log files to retrieve when troubleshooting a problem.

i.e. For problem "A" look in logs x, y and z on your client, a and b on the Media server and c on the Master.  (I understand that I will have to make determinations of the kind of entries I'm looking for given "problem "A"" but once I've determined what kinds of log entries I'm after I need to know what log files to look in.)

3.  What log files should only exist / relavent on a client, on a MS or on a Master server, 2 of the three or all three.

I've read through NBU manuals and guides and searched the web but haven't been able to find this kind of specific information only what process / daemon a log file belongs to and if lucky some very brief explanation (four to ten words).  I believe the info must be there but I'm spinning an lot of time trying to dig it out myself.

This has frustrated me for some time and what has prompted this post is that I am trying to definitively determine what the interfaces IPs and host names are used between client and MS plus between client and Master for specific backups.  So help with this in the short term would be valuable.

Hello. Is there an easy way to migrate just the NBU policies from a windows master server to a linux master server (5230 appliance)? I've tried copying the /usr/openv/netbackup/db/class directory, but I get a socket error.

Thank you!

1 Master server, 2 media servers(16 GB RAM, Duo core each, Gigabit NICs on server and switch) all having 3 networks: A, B & C

2 Exchange servers (32 GB RAM, Duo core each Gigabit NICs on server and switch) having 2 networks: A (for DAG name), B (for MAPI) and D (for DAG replication/seeding)

Please note my choice of alphabets : A on both sides means on same subnet for both exchange and nbu servers, same for the other networks. only C and D are unique.

Our observation:
Backup of rate is usually very very slow, data transfer is always at 195kb/s even when all other backup jobs have been suspended.

We have looked at everything and we can't seem to see why the rate is so slow. Kindly help.

Secondly, what is the best way to make sure that VM image (snapshots) move to the staging disk via SAN . Note that the force SAN option was used and it failed.

Thanks

Sharepoint Dedup rate

I need a solution

Hi,

I'm starting to use deduplication in Netbackup and I was wondering if somebody could tell me what the average dedup rate for sharepoint backups is?

I'm doing a backup of a Sharepoint 2007 environment and I get a dedup rate of 8%. Is this normal?
The environment consists of a sharepoint server and a seperated SQL server.

Erwin

Remove volume from AdvanceDisk Pool

I need a solution

Hi Everyone,

I am running Netbackup 7.5.0.5 with one Master Server and one media server running windows 2008 R2 and running into issues removing a volume from a AdvanceDisk Pool.

When trying to delete the volume with:

nbdevconfig -deletedv -stype AdvanceDisk -dp ADVPOOL_ACO_HQ -dv R:\

I get this error:

DSM was unable to find the following disk pool: ADVPOOL_HQ(AdvanceDisk)@XXXX-bk-hq1

I am not sure if it matters but that server ***-BK-HQ1 is my master server.

Any help would be great!

Flash Backup requires local admin - Symantec documentation is lacking

I do not need a solution (just sharing information)

Per the Symantec NetBackup_AdminGuide_SnapshotClient.pdf guide there are sections on configuring Flash Backup policies for Windows.  Yet as far as I can see it doesn't mention anywhere the need for the client to be running the NBU service with an account that has local admin rights.

Our testing has shown that just using the system account will not allow Flash Backups to work, and some of the troubleshooting docs cover the restore portion, which also requires local admin otherwise you see errors like this:

WRN - can't lock raw device for write: \\.\D: (WIN32 5: Access is denied.

Does anyone know of any official Symantec documentation that clarifies this?  I know that when you set up a Windows Flash Backup policy you get a pop up to the effect of requiring local admin running on the client, but I can't seem to find anything in any of the admin guides that back up this claim - and we keep running into roadblocks with server admins that are reluctant to run NBU with anything other than the system account.
