Per Terabyte licensing

I need a solution

Hi

Newbie to this site, i was trying to find the answer to the following question. I have 2 x 5220 appliances. I am backing up 2tb with ddup. I am licensed for 4tb in total. with my retention policy i am running low on space. is the license for the size of data being backed e.g the server data size or is it the data stored on the appliances.

If my server has 1.8tb of data and i back that up twice using full backup that would be 3.6tb on stored data on appliance what licence do i need, 1.8tb or 3.6tb

Backup and restore of vCenter Server Appliance

I need a solution

Hi.. I'm looking for a solution to backup and restore of vCenter Server Appliance 5.x. I've got for example:

- 10 ESXi 5.x servers managed by vCenter Server Appliance

- NB 7.5/7.6 with all required licenses to backup VMware virtual environment

- VCenter appliance can be backed up by NB as a normal vm.

I know I can't restore virtual machines using NB when vCenter server is not available. (There is no possibility to restore using ESXi managed by vCenter server even if vCenter is not working). 

We can also have a 1 ESXi server not managed by vCenter.

What are your recomendation to backup/restore of vCenter appliance ??

why do my Exchange 2010 DAG backups not use all my buffers

On my Windows 2003 Netbackup 7.1.0.4 master server I have NUMBER_DATA_BUFFERS set to 48.  All my standard backups then use 48 buffers.

I have noticed my Exchange backups are only using 12 buffers.  Where might  this be set?  I can drill down to the clients and see where buffer sizes can be changed but I don't see where the number of buffers might be changed.

Error 13 for windows host

I need a solution

Master Server : Linux   netbackup 7.5.0.5

Media Server : Linux   netbackup 7.5.0.5

Client server : Windows 2003  7.0.1

Backups are failing with EC 13..

Backup selection in policy is ALL LOCAL DRIVES. Also tried enabling the multiple data streams still backups are failing with EC 13

 

bptestbpcd -client from master server is working fine.

I had already created bpfis and bpbkar log directory on the client but logs are not getting created there.

Why the NBU 7.1.0.3 backup the Windows encryption folder slow than no encryption folder?

Hi experts

I ran into a situation when the NBU7.1.0.3 master server backup its folder "F:\3Dxx" into the VTL, the size of the folder is 1.4G, but the backup speed, elaspt time is different if I encrypt the folder.

The encrypt steps:

1,choose a folder
2, righ click-properties-advcanced-encrypt contents to secure data-OK
 
I saw either backup to tape or backup to disk, the speed is slow for encryption files but faster for non-encryption files.
You can see the attached screen shots shows the backup speed, kb/per second, elspst time, kb wirters(it's a litter different for encryption and non-encryption, but the backup source is the same folder).
 
I also fetched the bpbkar logs, nbsu after the backup, job detaileds, please kindly advicse why.

How to restore Netbackup SQL Server snapshot and roll forward in time

  • SQL Server 2008 on Windows Server 2008
  • on VMWare
  • Netbackup 7.5

Backup is done via Netbackup on VMWare level through snapshots. So a snapshot of the entire VM is taken.

This can snapshot can be seen on my Windows server in the "Netbackup MS SQL Client" gui; there I can see the SQL Server snapshots.

I can even restore these snapshots just fine.

But what if I want to roll forward into time ?

Example : I take a snapshot at 15h and at 19h I decide to restore to a point in time let's say 17h. So I restore the SQL Server snapshot and then the database is at level of 15h. I need it to be at 17h. How do I do that ?

From the NBU client gui, I can see transaction log backups but I am unable to apply them to the snapshot restore. There does not seem to be a link.

Any suggestions ?

of perhaps it is even not possible to roll forward with a snapshot restore ?

Find policy schedule by media ID

Good Morning-

I have built a custom vault report that will email a list of ejectable media for a particular vault to our backup operators -- this allows me to expand the basic NBU vault reports to include my custom text and directions.

Looking to enhance this slightly to include the 'schedule' that was written to the tape, but not sure how to locate that information.

All of my backup jobs run twice a week through two schedules (i.e. FULL-MONDAY and FULL-THUR, FULL-TUESDAY and FULL-FRIDAY, etc...) and all schedules use the same retention period of 3 months.

So when the report runs I have a list of all media that needs to be ejected, but no way to know which media belongs to what set... What media belongs to FULL-MONDAY, versus FULL-THUR, and so forth. In our configuration, each of the sets is sent to a different staging area.

Maybe I am going about this wrong? Is there a better way to identify the media used by a schedule?

Netbackup Cloud Storage option fault

Hi,

   Recently, I've upgraded my Netbackup 7.1.0.3 to Netbackup 7.5.0.4 for the reason that I want to use the backup to Amazon S3 option. After the migration I'm connecting to the Java console of the Media Server and the "Configure Cloud Storage Server" option is grey (see attached picture).

   What is the problem? Does it need extra license? 

Envirnment

Master Server

Windows Server 2008 R2 x64

Netbackup 7.5.0.4

 

Media Server

Policy Priority

I need a solution

Currently we are running Netbackup 7.5.0.4. We have few policy that we backup on tape. Is there way to mark a certian policy in high priority that when it kicks of it starts as soon as tape drive is available instead of waiting in queue.

vmware backups are failing bulk with status 14 & 42 when using appliance as media server.

NBU versions are 7.5.6

Appliance version is 2.5.3 (this is using as a media server and backup is going to DD & Quantum disks)

Vcenter version is 5.1

Proxies are Windows server 2008 R2 64 Bit and they are at cloud.

Transport mode is NBD

 

The appliance was upgraded to 2.5.3 from 2.0.3. Since then, we are experiencing bulk backup failures with 14 & 42. The backup is writing some data and getting failed later. They will get completed on the conescutive attempts.

Case is opened with Vendor and so far no help :(

The following is my understanding or questions about the architecture, or componenets. To provide your advice, please use commands whenver possible

How can I find out what technology am I using, AdvancedDisk or OpenStorage?
If i understand it correctly, each different disk pool is corresponding a volume on DD, then how do I know what volume does this disk pool is matching to?
Is that true that DD appliance has SAN connection to each media servers? and on Linux server, how do I find the DD device?

 

I know there are a lot of questions here. Appreciate your help. I could not find out myself.

One path failing with EC 58

Hi All,

 

We have a concern with one of our client where it is failing with EC 58. Unfortunately only a single path is getting failed with EC 58 whereas the remaining 2 paths are getting successfully backed up

 

The backup selections are as follows:

 

Shadow Copy Components:\
D:\
C:\

Where only the D:\ path is getting failed with EC 58 and the remaining 2 are being successfully backed up.

This issue is being faced atleat twice a week especially when we are going for a full backup during the weekend.

 

Is there any permanent solution for this?

vRanger Backup Issues

Within our environment, our VM admin is using vRanger to backup the VMs (not his nor my choice--we do have our own VMs that we are able to back up using NetBackup Enterprise Server 7.5.0.5), but they want the vRanger image files backed up.  I am able to back up the image files successfully upon incremental backups, but with full backups, they fail with status 13 or status 24 after going over 21 hours.  I want to split the backups up, but the vRanger is on a Windows Server 2008R2 machine, which saves the images to the E: drive with part of the VM name in the field.  Most of the VMs have a standard prefix for the site, but there are a few that do not have the same:

e.g.

  sitehost1

  sitehost2

  sitehost3

  annoyingname

  someothername

 

With only a few of these, I would be able to do a simple globular expression, but there are about 80% with the site name and 20% without and over 100 VMs, which makes doing a globular expression for the backup selection (or exclude list) a chore.  Beyond that, if a new VM is spun up, I have no way of guaranteeing that the new VM's image is backed up.  I'm doing this per policy, but would it be better to set up User backup and have the vRanger launch a backup once it's completed the image?  Or is there a better way to select the VM images to back up?

Verifying Disk Retention for Netbackup

I need a solution

Currently we are running Netbackup 7.5 0.6 - We have all of our backups going to disk on a storage unit.  Monday - Friday everyday we are running Duplication which is moving the images from disk to tape. 

Our individual policies have a retention period which varies between 1 week, 1 month, 1 year. 

Everything is being moved daily from disk to tape, however I cannot see that we have any retention on the disk itself. 

What do I need to do in order to allow a 3 month retention on disk, and how can I verify what my current retention levels are?

I have been googling this and have not found the right answer.  Also we are not using SLPs.

I have issue after enabled BLIP in VMware policy. All the Jobs are getting failed with Bpstart notify failed 73.

Master Server - Widows server 2008R2 - NetBackup 7.5.0.6

Media Server - SuSe Linux - NetBackup 7.5.0.5
